This may be a bit of a silly question and more for one of the technology forum. How live is live tv eexactly?

I supose football would be a good example. Say a shot is taken at the ground, how long exactly is it before we see it on our screen. Not sure how much this is affected by distance to the studio and such .

Its about 1 second on satellite TV
Less on Terrestrial and cable TV.

Unless its on a tape delay.

They use Distribution amplifiers to amplify the signal.... hence it can arrive instantly pretty much.

In the states there is no such thing as live tv only what they call "as live". The FCC says there must be a 10sec delay in all broadcasts to edit out profanity etc.

Thats just for the processing of the signal.

Use speed of light to work out time for actual transfer of signal (299 792 458 m / s) [sat will obviousally take longer, distance to sat + distance to minidish]

I assume ntl digtial is relayed through satillites at some point as it runs a second or so behind analogue.

I think that is actually processing of the signal (digital back to analogue)
