DivX audio out of sync and CPU usage at 100%

I'm using a mini-ix system with my DivXs. Around half of them seem to play out of sync with audio. I'm trying 3 different players, WMP, Winamp and DivX player.

Also when i check Task Manager the CPU usage is a solid 100%. So it looks like the problem is performance related. But the rest of the movies play fine with a fairly low CPU usage (60 - 70%).

I've installed as many codecs as i could find :) and have used GSPOT to check if there's any missing but it shows 3 or 4 codecs that it can use for the file. My movies are a mixture of avi and asf i think?

    any suggestions?

might be a case of too many codecs spoil the movie.

    windows could be getting confused.
uninstall all your codecs and install the xvid binary
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/xvid.cfm

i have only have 3 self installed codecs on any system :
    real alt
    quicktime alt
    koepis xvid

    play everything no problem.

also try to find out whats using your cpu and stop the priocess

    i'll try that thanks.

the CPU usage is caused by the player (whichever one i use). So i reckoin it a dcoding problem.

Have you tried BS Player? The free version, I've found, is very good, and plays movies that DivX or M$ Media Player can't.

Try Videolan player, it plays everything back without using Directshow codecs (afaik). So that would rule out a codec problem.

Or use FFDShow as your decoder, its very low CPU usage.

I havent tried FFDShow, I might look into it but Videolan(VLC) is the best media player available IMO

    www.videolan.org

Get it before McCreevy's software patents do.

I thought you couldnt patent computer programs

    mixed results.

BSplayer plays a few more of ther divxs but no improvement on the rest.

Videolan plays more still and all the audio is synced correctly. the only problem now is that there is occasional stutters in the playback. every 5 seconds or so the image freezes, the sound keeps playing and then it matches up again. CPU usage is still quite high. The proccesor on the ITX bpard is only 600MHz so it could be struggling. I checked the divx website though and the min spec is 450MHz so i'm confident it should be able to playback the movies.

I also removed all the codecs and then put them back on as GSPOT recommended. first was 3ivx, then xvid and divx 5.0.

i don;t remember having this problem with win2k. if it persists i might go back to it.

i use klite mega codec pack to install everything bar xvid and ac3, i install those manually, and of course videolan

    I have a P3 500, 256Mb, 32Mb GF2 MX200 and WD 80Gb Caviar that plays films no bother with VLC.
What Spec are you running, have you checked for Viruses/Spyware etc. How of the RAM is in use with no programs running

What mITX board do you have?
The C3 cpus aren't particularly great at floating point, a 1Ghz Nehemiah is roughly equivalent to a 400Mhz Celeron, floating point wise.
I've an MII12000 (1.2Ghz Nehemiah C5P), plays everything I tried on it (just over one weekend though, didn't use it that much).
I'll be reinstalling *nix and Windows on it soon to set it up as a media box, thinking of putting a PVR250 in it for MPEG2 hardware capture. It's powerful enough to play DVDs at about 30% cpu usage (I didn't have any of the *proper* drivers installed under Win2k), and MPEG4 media was playing at about 60-80%.
The newer boards use the CN400 chipset, which afaik has full MPEG2 decoding and MPEG4 hardware acceleration.
Your 600Mhz machine is going to struggle with most newer MPEG4 stuff, especialy if it's a high quality rip (all the funky features and algorithms used, high bit-rate etc.).

I'm using th Epia M6000 so its rated at 600MHz but compared to a Pentium would be alot lower.

I reckon its performance based at this stage. Some of the DIvxs play fine and others are jumpy. I've installed all the codecs mentioned above and now use 5 different players with varying results. The problem movies, however, are jumpy on ALL of the players.

    oh well.

So either the movies are dodgy, or your computer just isn't up to the task.

While a 450mhz may be the min spec, that probably means for a 320x288 resolution with no b-frames or other such fancy features. If it skips in videolan, it'll skip in anything. Videolan and FFDshow both use the same decoder afaik, and its a very good decoder.

looks like you'll either have to get a hardware MPEG4 decoder or limit yourself to Mpeg1/2/DVD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,496 ✭✭✭quarryman

i think the movies are fine. They work on my main system. This is my MP3 rig. May as well post a pic. Its completely silent (I don't use a fan with that vent in the pic) and boots up in about 20 seconds (from Hibernate) straight to music.

I can use wake-on-lan too which allows me to turn it on from college or elsewhere and grab files etc. Or have music playing for when i get home :)

can you add an MPEG4 decoder on somehow?

there was a Sigma-X or XCard or some such thing knocking about a while back.

    Haven't looked into it much.

    www.videolan.org

Without a doubt the finest player ever.

Anyone know any good DivX/X-Vid/Ogg video DVD players?? Aldi and Lidl were chuckin' them out before Christmas, and I can't find any....

Thats a fine looking mp3 player quarryman. Where did you get that?

win xp kills that board. it's not as if you have a geansaí-load of ram in there either q-ball. downgrade to win 2000 me thinks.
