How about a little Motorsport Quiz just for a bit of fun.

This should be an easy one:

Who is the only driver to ever race in F1 on an Irish Drivers Licence?

Wasnt that ginger minger that does commentarty for RTE...David Kennedy I think his name is.....raced in F1....all DNQ's! HA HA! :D

Well, I would have said David Kennedy as well initially but, thinking about it more, it could also be Derek Daly, presuming he had an Irish licence.

If we're talking about Irish racing licences, i.e., those issued by Motorsport Ireland nee RIAC, well then you'd have to also count Eddie Irvine as he used to race under an Irish-issued racing licence for many years, I believe (he may have switched to a British one later on in his F1 career, though). The reason why he used to race under an Irish licence was because he got it for free, and he would have had to have paid for a British one. This is true, as I saw him mention it in a television interview before.

So, if we're talking Irish road driving licences, it's probably either Derek Daly or David Kennedy. If it's racing licences, you'd have to include Eddie Irvine there as well.

    So, am I right? ;)

Here's one for you. Nigel Mansell won his first Grand Prix in which year, at which race and at which circuit? But, I'm going to be very anal and pedantic here. I want the exact title of the race in question. Let's see if anyone can get it without Googling as well. ;)

    No Googling now...

The Real Jordan Fans should be able to sing these.... :D

    1) Name the engine used by Jordan in their debut season in F1(1991)

    2) Name the drivers Jordan had for that season

    3) Who were their main sponsor for that season and what colour was the car

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭andyman

I forgot to mention that you have to get the question right in order to ask one.I forgot about David Kennedy but the answer I was looking for was Derek Daly.

Almost. Give me the full, proper title of the race in question (including sponsor).

Told you I was going to be a bastard over this one! :D

    3.5 litre Ford-Cosworth V8 HB engine.
    Dempsey wrote:

Andrea de Cesaris and Bertrand Gachot were the original two drivers. When Gachot was sent to jail for spraying pepper spray in the face of a taxi driver, Michael Schumacher, Roberto Moreno and Alessandro (better known to you and me as 'Alex'! :D ) Zanardi were drafted in later in the season to replace Gachot.

7Up and Fujifilm were the main sponsors. Colour was green.

As a side note, in my opinion, that car (the Jordan 191) is the most beautiful F1 car ever created.

Actually, yeah, come to think of it, you did say "race in F1", didn't you? Kennedy never actually qualified for a Grand Prix, therefore, he never actually "raced". Which means that leaves just Derek Daly as the only driver with an Irish driving licence to have ever actually "raced" in F1.

I think the sponsor was Shell but im not very confident.

Well people, we now have all the details you need (or 99% ;) ). Come on, string the answer together. You're so close here you're almost on fire! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭dor83

1985, Shell European Grand Prix, Brands Hatch?
    Thats my best guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Oooooh, so close but, I'm afraid dor83, no cigar this time for you.

But, we're getting warmer, people. Keep trying. ;)

Shell Oil's Grand Prix of Europe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Oooh, Dempsey, thats' it........ almost! You're missing just two pieces of information from your answer. Put them in, and you'll have it.

Im gonna say Shell Oil's Grand Prix of Brands Hatch??

A few drivers there that I'd forgotten about. Pepper spray really? How long did he get?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Dempsey was closer with his answer. He just left out two vital pieces of information which I had originally asked for as well. Combine them, with his answer, and whoever puts the whole lot together has it.

The 1985 Shell Oil Grand Prix of Europe at Brands Hatch? :D

About the previous question, wasn't Ralph Firman driving on an Irish racing license a couple of years ago? I know he's obviously English but I was pretty sure he had an Irish license, and that's why the official classifications always listed him as 'IRL'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Okay, I'm giving it to steviec. Nigel Mansell won his first Grand Prix at the 1985 Shell Oils Grand Prix Of Europe at Brands Hatch. Now, I believe, it's up to you, steviec, to come up with the next question.

As for the Ralph Firman thing, I thought about that myself when I posted before about drivers who raced under Irish racing licences. I'm not 100% sure if he did or not so that's why I didn't mention him, but I think it was Irish road driving licences that were looked for, not racing licences. I know he holds duel nationality alright but I'm not sure what nationality racing licence he drives under. I have a funny feeling, though, that it might be an British MSA licence, and that he just specifically asked to be listed as Irish in official classifications when he was driving in F1.

I Noticed that too.But I can assure you that he was British.Whether he had an Irish backround, I don't know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Okay, well, if steviec isn't going to ask a question.......... :D

Who is the only driver credited with finishing a Grand Prix upside-down? And in what year and at what race did it happen? Remember, no Googling! ;)

Though, it's a bit hard to forget, to be honest. It was one of the most spectacular crashes and ways to cross the finish line ever! Trust me, if you've ever seen the video of it, you'll remember it pretty quickly! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

That wasnt monza '93? Cant remember for the life of me the name of the driver. It was a white car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Christian Fittipaldi, monza 1993, I think he got a point, did he????

It doesn't matter where your road driving licence was issued Motorsport Ireland will issue FIA approved licences to race at local, national & international level (if you are an Irish citizen)...Irvine had an MSI issued licence & I'm almost sure Ralph Firman had too.

    Kersh wrote:

We have a winner! :D Yes, Christian Fittipaldi in a Minardi ran into the back of his teammate just as they were about to cross the finish line at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. His car went up into the air and did a complete 360 degree somersault flip, making him the only man credited with finishing a Grand Prix whilst flying through the air upside-down! :D

Don't know if he managed to get a point or not, Kersh. I'll have to look that one up. But, if he did, it makes it an even more amazing finish, I reckon.

Your turn to come up with a question now, Kersh.

Oh yeah, I know all that. I know that if you're an Irish citizen (have an Irish passport) MSI will issue you with a competition licence and I knew Irivine raced under one alright. But Ralph Firman has duel nationality (father is English, mother is Irish) and holds both Irish and British passports so he's entitled to race under either a British MSA-issued licence or an Irish MSI-issued licence, whichever he so chooses. It's just that, to be honest, I don't know which he chose to race under. You may be right that he chose to race with an Irish licence but I don't know for certain myself.

    I'll ask a question.

Where and in what year did Michael Schumacher win his first GP?

    No Googling!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

1992 Belgian Grand Prix, Spa Francorchamps. One year after he made his debut there in the Jordan.

Confirm that I'm right, andyman, and I'll see if I can come up with a question then, ok?

    Yes Aiden your right

Okay, here's a rallying question. Who is the only driver to have won the British Rally Championship in a Ford Escort RS Cosworth and in what year?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭andyman

I know nothng about rallying so this is out of my league

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Malcom wilson, in 1994 if I remember correctly, dont know co-driver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Spot on, Kersh! Malcolm Wilson won the BRC in 1994 in an Escort RS Cosworth, both his and the Escort Cosworth's only championship win in the BRC. Just so you know, the co-driver was Bryan Thomas.

Kersh, you're up next to come up with a question, I believe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Martin Brundle finished 2nd to Senna in 1983 British F3 - Who finished third in that championship that year?? Ill allow googling for this one.

Not a hope. Come on guys....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Christ Kersh, that's a toughie. I'm racking my brains here trying to think of drivers who were competing in F3 around that time in the hope one of them might be the right answer! :D

Okay, I'll try Andy Wallace. Or maybe Johnny Dumfries? Am I in the right ballpark?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Yes, you are in the ballpark alright, but at the wrong end, and the opposition just scored... :p

He was a young lad, with ambitions (went no where though), not an f3 every year type of guy like Rick Morris in Fford 1981.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Wasn't Tommy Byrne, was it? I know he won the British F3 Championship outright the previous year.

Nope, here is a clue. 2 famous singers shared this young mans name....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

God Kersh, this really is a toughie! I think I'm going to need some more clues if I'm to ever get this one. And you know what? If I do, I'll probably end up kicking myself because I didn't get it sooner even though the answer was so obvious! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭Fabritzo

Tom Jones lesser known brother, Davy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Bingo...the young american driver Davy Jones, from New York. He was 19, Dont know where he went after that. Now Fabritzo, its your turn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭Fabritzo

Who is Bibendum? If you don't know the answer off the top of yer head I don't think there's any option but to google.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Easy one, Fabritzio. He's the famous "Michelin Man". Am I right? ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭Fabritzo

Aye, he is indeed, you gotta think up a question now, good luck !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

"AND LOOK AT THAT! Out..... and colossally..... that's Mansell! That is Nigel Mansell! And the car absolutely shattered! He's fighting for control, you can see what's happened. Mansell is out of the race. Now, this could change and WILL change the World Championship!"

That's a quote from Murray Walker but what occurance was he talking about, at which race and in which year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Its Mansell getting a puncture in 1986, in Adelaide, when the season went down to the wire and all he really had to do was finish where he was. Am I right???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Bang on, Kersh! The dramatic pictures of Mansell's rear tyre exploding in a shower of sparks and flailing rubber, thereby handing the championship on a plate to Alain Prost.

Okay, you're next to come up with a question then.
