    Hi there,
I'm relatively new to the whole area of freelance writing for magazines, and have done some work for a few publications, but am wondering how editors/co-ordinators generally work out what they'll pay writers? Is there a general calculation for how many words the article is, etc? Or is it a lot of it based on how much experience you have?
    Any feedback appreciated.
    Many thanks

    It depends on the publication.
For example the Irish Times pay about 250 euro for 1000 words; thats about industry standard, the Village magazine pay the same. Some places pay less and experience (unless you are a 'name' journalist) means little. For better money hit up the UK press, I did 750 word piece for the Guardian and got over 300 euro.
Make sure you know the rate before you write the piece...
In world terms, the reputation and the payment dont correspond. From what I know the highest paying magazine in the world is the National Geographic (15-30,000 bucks for a major article). Conde Nast also pays a **** load. Take a look at who's advertising for an idea at rates..
There are also a number of books/websites that you can view suggested pitch styles/payments/times til payment but you gotta pay for these...
