Problem with heating

    Hi,

I have Bord Gais at home and I've a little switch (it displays the time and has a slide and a boost button on it) that turns the heat to the radiators on and off.

Lately the display on this switch has died.
Would it need a new battery? Or how does it get its power?

The water still heats fine. Is there anyway to get heat back?
    :)
    Thanks
    M

    Hi
"I've a little switch (it displays the time and has a slide and a boost button on it"
That's timer unit/control unit. It's powered by esb with battery back up ( only to remember settings etc)
Check that water is not being heated by esb immersion group ( double switch usually near copper tank)
Check fuse /mcb board that nothing has tripped, although there would be more than timer on same circuit. Another thing to check iis...Usually installers wire timer from an existing socket, this may be near the gas boiler and they use a switched fused spur box. This may have been switched off in error or this small fuse may be blown. If this be so eventually back up battery would discharge and display would die without either power supply.
Blank display usually means unit is knackered. When you hit "boost" you should hear boiler starting up. IF..IF...If you are ok with diy , with timer removed from wall, you can see the wiring connections to the back plate. Using INSULATED tools you can "short" out the timer panel and the boiler should start.ONLY do this if you feel happy. RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK.
It timer needs changing, you may not be able to get exact match....Bring the original, or info on original when going for replacement and count the number of wires . This is important. Some switches will / will not do for zone valve switching. If you have basic unit , its only 2 / 3 wires and a small wire loop. Any good Heating supplier /BIG hardware shop will sort you out.( I don't think we are allowed to name shops here) Very simple to change.
To remove old switch...look for a very very small hidden screw, usually under unit ...loosen first (should not have to remove fully) and swing unit upward ond off backplate. Replace in reverse order ..look for a couple of locating tabs on top.
You could be lucky and get exact match...No electrics to play with...if original backplate will do.

    Hopes this helps
    t

just change fuse or put in 5amp fuse in esb flat box4inch square that feeds power to timer led unit,u may need to reset trip switch on main esb fuseboard, reset mcb.push it up.use 13amp fuse if u dont have new 5amp fuse handy, approx halfinch, long.esb fuseunit for timer shud be within 6ft of ledtimer unit.
