Yeah, I've heard of it. Supposed to be very good. Apparently it has elements of Lord of Rings and The Matrix. Must watch out for it.

Ye it looks ridiculous. Should be fun, can't imagine a film like this from Russia as being any good.

Saw about half of it a while back and I have to say that it is very, very impressive. Its easily as good as anything Hollywood has put out in the past few years and I really can't wait to see it properly.

They're currently shooting two sequels back to back and rumour has it that part three will be in English.

I was under the impression that this was originally a russian movie. The first russian one has been released and second is due to be released this summer. Fox searchlight signed the rights to this trilogy and are remaking it in english, kind of like what was done with the ring.

As far as I understand, this is the same Russian movie

    Yeah, very impressive.
I take it this is still in Russian then and hasn't be dubbed?

The version I saw was'nt subtitled. But that didn't take anyting away from the film. Visually it is excellant and it only cost somewhere in the region of 4 million dollars. The film is'nt being remade, the studio merely wants part three shot in English, but nothing has been finalised yet.

I can't wait to see it in in the cinema.

Yeah, I heard about this a while ago. It looks pretty impressive. I read in an article somewhere that apparently Russia is going through a boom with it's movie industry and loads of weird films are supposedly coming out soon. It's something about them not being influenced by American movies that gives them more freedom and creativity.

Tis quite good, although I found some of it a tad confusing (that may have been down to poor subtitles though).
Thought the acting was good, first time I've seen a Russian film afaik.
I'd go see it in the cinema if it comes out over here.

I hear they're doing some pretty exciting stuff with the subtitles. For example, at one point a woman says, "Come here" the subtitles turn slowly red and begin to drip down the screen. When a character screams the subtitles will fill the screen.

Sounds pretty cool eh? Reminds me a little of Tony Scott's Man On Fire.

Saw this last night. Thought it was really great. The combination of the subtitles and the story line mean you really have to pay attention to what's going on. But I like that in a movie. It's certainly better than being treated like an idiot. At least it is so long as the pay off is there and it is.

I was really impressed with everything about it. The acting, the special effects, the style, the storyline and the, imo, pretty great conclusion. I loved how it ended, leaving you anticipating the next part but also answering some of the questions from the start of the movie.

I'd be tempted to find the books in order to find out how it all pans out, but I like the style of the movie so much I've decided to wait to see the whole trilogy before looking for the books. It puts the likes of Hellboy to such shame.

I saw a "dvd" of this a while ago. Granted they were probably not offical subtitles but I though the film was an incoherent mess.

I was really looking forward to it too. Whilst I applaud the results they got on such a small buget I though the pacing, editing and general narrative of the whole thing just didnt work.

Would be interested to see the new subtitles though.

Meh is saw last night was impressed at all bored out of my brain. Its everyday a russian movie comes to the cinema and thats the reason. :O

From what I've read so far review wise, it's important to remember this is only the first part of a trilogy and thus leaves a lot to be answered in the sequels.
That will be fine by me so long as they don't pull a matrix and change their mind half way through!

I also seen it on Friday and thought it was excellent. My only qualm was that it seemed to slow down in the latter stages of the film. Thought the subtitles were absolutly excellent, shows that they actually put some effort into subtitling it for english audiences. Cant wait for the next two.

The premise was good and it had some nice effects but I just couldnt get in the story. A lot of things didnt make sense or were just poorly explained.

Also it looks like nescafe sponsored them so thats probably where they got the funding

It looks like Nescafe sponsered them????????

Actually I have to say I liked how it ended so much I forgot how appalling the product placement was. The Nokia was just about forgivable, but the Nescafe? Jesus wept, that was painful.

It's still my only fault with it. ;)
