I have to sleep on my stomach or side with the covers over my neck cos a fear of vampires. If I lie on my back I keep waking up, maybe its the fact both ears are clear not one muffled, i'm a very light sleeper!!
Does anyone have any tips I could try to nod off? Dont say beers or pills or sex..

Deprive yourself of sleep for ages, then you'll have no problem sleeping.

OP could rub garlic on his neck to ward off vampires.

That and over-amorous lovers, with a stench of garlic off your neck you'll never have to worry about lovebites again.

I usually find it's the opposite, the longer I stay awake, the more restless I become and find it much harder to sleep. The best thing to do in my opinion is go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, your body gets into a routine, stick to it and you'll never have trouble sleeping!!

I can only fall asleep on my right side, curled up in bed.

I too get insomnia but would recomend staying away from booze, you sleep badly, even though you are zonked and then are tired/hungover the next day.

Do something really boring for about an hour before bed.....

I can go to bed at any time (usually pretty late) and I always go to sleep straight away, I even have a problem trying to stay awake to read, I'm always so tired, works for me though.

    read a good book!
curl up with a warm and tosty body and cuddle.
watch a move with the fire crackling and a duvet all around.
a long chat on the phone with someone really nice!

watch the Paul o grady shoe at night. its repeated on ITV. after that, i usually nod off.

I normally drop off after about 10 mins & I have to be screamed at to wake up :D

If I can't fall asleep, I normally turn on a DVD or read a few pages [sometimes chapters] of a book which normally sends me into a deep sleep ... the amount of times I've been yelled at for dropping the book off the bed [which of course I don't hear], but herself does :D

usualy if i'm not too tirend i can fall asleep on my left side, if i'm really tired i just go to sleep on my right side.. if i'm drunk , or just feeling a bit odd, i go to sleep on my back.

but i always wake up face down on the bead

get yourself a graveyard shift in a 24 hour garage, locked behind the glass with no vampire access & a panic button you should be fine then you can sleep all day safe in the knowledge that there are no vampires about, or you could study the subject of vampires a little more, you may be surprised at what you'll find...

I used be the same until I injured my right shoulder and had to learn to sleep on the left side! I reckon once my shoulder is fixed I'll unlearn that skill though!

I've never understood this. If I'm reading a good book, there's no chance I'll go to sleep. In fact it'll have me up 'til 5 in the morning, usually due to the fact that it's "good". I recall starting a book one night, and then finishing it and realising it was 8 o' clock in the morning! That's what a "good book" does to me. I don't understand how you can fall asleep reading a book. It shows a lack of interest in the book. At least that's what I think.

I can never get to sleep. I have to go to bed and hope for the best. Of course in the morning time, when I'm woken, I can return to sleep in a matter of seconds - and often do.

Indeed, reading gets my brain all active and I can't sleep for ages. Command and Conquer Generals had the same effect when I started playing that first, had dreams about strategies and everything that kept waking me up

Anyway, look at some crap on TV before going to bed, usually dumbs down the mind so it's easy to nod off.

Use one of those neck braces like Avid Merrion to keep the vampires at bay if you're that worried ;)

i tend to read a good book in one sitting(rather than the telly unless its a good movie) a boring or slightly dull book just pi$$es me off! but after reading a whole book its easy to fall asleep!

Remove all stimulants 30 minutes before going to bed. That means no music, no internet, only light-hearted TV, comedy is best. Definitely no coffee or tea, no food (a very light snack if you must), maybe have a glass of water.

Try and get a bedtime routine (have shower, brush your teeth, load the washing machine), which will make you feel like it more like bedtime when you do it. Regular exercise is also very good for improving the quality of your sleep and how fast you fall asleep.

Bah, it'll take more than a good **** and a stiff drink to sleep through the ultra-loud talentless shíte music that seems to be booming its way through my walls from about a mile away, possibly the Helix.
Good God what time is this crap supposed to finish?
Sounds like my neighbours are running a nightclub.
"Gotta be up early? Don't like listening to our stupid music? Well tough shít buddy, we've got a license!" .... tossers.

same here, except i lie on my left side...

the funny thing is. i find it easier to get to sleep, now that i'm working nights, than i ever did before

im the same in that I find that the only way I can get sleep is by being awake for more than 20 hours. I find it really hard to sleep before 4am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,388 ✭✭✭Kernel

Well, being a vampire, I have to get to sleep before dawn, so I usually either hang upside down from the rafters in the attic (summer) or tucked up in my coffin with soil from my homeland.

I've heard that when mortal men ****, it releases chemicals in the brain making them sleepy. You can use this as an excuse for falling asleep after sex also.

I'm with Page on the reading too, it helps to relax my mind and make me tired. I have to force myself to stay awake if it's a page turning chapter.... then again I work for a living, so I don't have much problem sleeping when I get the chance! :p

    I have this wierd routine..

I get into bed and lie on my back, where I just relax for a few minutes. Then I turn my head to the left, relax a bit more, and then turn onto my right side, not completely, more sort of leaning to the right side. And that's the position I fall asleep in. Every night. Without fail. Only takes 5, maybe 10 minutes.

All the above is provided the person in the apartment above me isn't banging about, which he sometimes does. Also, if I'm drunk, then the routine is changed to 'bed-sleep'.

I also can't read before bed or it just keeps me awake. Nor can I watch tv in bed.. same reason.

    Kev.

I got this relaxation cd off a friend a while pack and it would put me to sleep in no time. But now that I can't find it I generally go to bed with some quiet music on. I've been falling asleep to Once More With Feeling the musical episode of Buffy for the past week.

Best way to get to sleep is a good bat on the head with a big stick. Works for me, although I now have a 3 second memory....
wait, what was the question again?...
    how'd I get here...
    who am I...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭bean

For years i found it very hard to fall asleep, aware of that falling asleep/falling sensation and every noise distracted me.

Then i thought about how tired i feel when its time to get up for work and how i wished it was night time. So when want to sleep i just think of that feeling.

Very gentle music - very low though, put me to sleep. Nick Drake for example
