    Hi,

I currently have a p4 3.4ghz with HT, 1 gig ram, Ati X800se card, 160gig hard drive, dvd rom/burner etc.

I am wondering, what should I be looking for to upgrade this to the latest spec, ie, good enough to run anything with absolutely no hitches?

Am thinking at the moment of more ram, but what graphics card should I look for in replacement of the X800se? And where is the best place to buy new parts of this kind?

    Thanks for any help.

What games do you have problems running?

Games with alot of bots,....like Battle Vietnam, generally runs well at highest res with 64 bots, but the odd time gives a stutter....

Doom 3, again, works generally fine on highest res with most options on full, but some areas it gets stuttery for several seconds.

Nothing major, but also looking to invest in some new stuff for the future as well, to save me the trouble later on.

Really depends on your budget, but if you're upgrading for games, go for a better gfx card. The new X850 is a stonker, if you have PCI-Express. If you have a 775 motherboard, go for a new 660 processor, they fly according to the reviews, better than the current Pentium Extreme, and that was with 32-bit XP. Should really fly with XP-64. Never underestimate the effect a good hard drive can have on system performance either, the Maxtor DiamondMAX with NCQ and 16Mb cache is very quick (nearly as good as a raptor and much bigger/quiter).

I can never understand this mentality, by the time you run into problems, new stuff will have come out and prices on existing stuff will have dropped, so then you can either buy what you have bought now for much cheaper, or get something much better for what you're willing to spend now.

Of course if you want to upgrade for the shiny new gadget factor, that's something I can understand :)

I was definetly in this mindset also.

Part of it was some sort of underlying belief that the games would somehow be better if I could squeeze out an extra few frames per second. It turned out they weren't.

MobileInfantry - If you really need to update (whihc you don't) - RonanH made some good suggestions (especially the often overlooked cache size on hard discs).

Also have a look on tomshardware for video card reviews.
