ibook running 10.3.9: CS, Office, Norton Utilities. Extra stick of ram.

USB drive plugged into PC: works fine
USB drive plugged into Mac: pizza of doom

Any ideas? USB drive is unusable in the Mac.
Something stupid like Itunes locking the MP3s on the drive? How do I turn that off?

    tks

If you've got another Mac with OSX around the place (or, indeed, any UNIX machine), you can remotely access it via SSH (while the spinning pizza of doom is up on the screen) and type top into the terminal. This should bring up a list showing all the programs running on your iBook, along with stats like the processor and RAM usage of each one. If it's any one program that's specifically misbehavin', then it should be pretty clear from the processor usage stat.

Sorry, exactly what do you want to do??
Im assuming the USB key(or external HD??) has MP3s you want on it, im lost as to what you want after that.
Is it that the USB key doesnt work on mac?some keys just dont work with mac, they all should but theres always one or two that wont.

Never heard of iTunes locking MP3s to a drive though, only hides them on iPods.

I want to copy from the removable drive to the main drive. Stealing music, you know.

Unfortunately, I don't have another Mac to SSH from.

Top shows about 20% utilisation: it's not really busy doing anything.

I've seen something similar happening with mine.
Have you tried accessing the usb drive from a terminal?
    It should be in /Volumes/<name>

Glad you said that, she's pretty inarticulate for a Moderator.

    :D

    Oh yeah, what's CS?

What I want to do: get a working USB drive.
My PCs don't have a problem with this.

    CS is Creative Suite.

Already doing that for another drive. Seems a bit pointless to have to carry a PC around with me.

Are there significant problems with file locking/permissions issues on Mac OS X 10.3.9 when automounting USB drives?

I haven't experienced any with 10.3.9. It did, however, feck up Java and my machine is so shagged that I'm using it only for menial stuff until Tiger comes out and gets installed. But that's another story...

I wonder if there's some sort of formatting anomaly, was the drive originally formatted on a PC or a Mac? I've had no problems going the Mac>PC route, nut have had problems (like you) going the PC> Mac direction.

Is it one of those USB flash drives? If you want to format it on the Mac for PC use, then use Disk Utility, select the entire drive, not the volume, and then in the Volume Format options, there's a PC option in there somewhere - doing this from memory so you'll have to bear with me. Erase the USB drive thattaway and you can use it on either system.
