I've got an old compaq proliant 1200 running as a Proxy Server / SMB machine here.

    Machine is solid, and has 512MB in it, 233mhz chip, ultra wide scsi etc. 2 x 9gb, 1 x 18gb - http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/ProLiant1200/quickspecs.html

Currently its running Suse 9 pro, ftp installed around 8months ago.

Its fine, but i'm not convinced on Suse as a Server, before it was running a thin install of mandrake, which has a better software upgrade setup (urpmi) .

I want to setup this server with the following roles.

    - SMB shares
    - Squid Proxy
    - Popup Blocker
    - Email Relaying - i want to scan incoming/outgoing emails and forward to Exchange - antivirus/spam check
    - Firewall / Gateway

I was hoping for either a small distro which specialies in doing this, or an easily configurable one that can.

    Any idea's

Must be open source / free

I'm experienced enough with user friendly distro's mandrake/fedora/suse/ubuntu

Is it time to take the leap into Debian/Slack/Gentoo ?

Well, you know Id just have to go for gentoo, but tbh, im not sure it suits for all server configs, thats a tough one, gentoo's portage requires a bit of hard disk space, basically it would be difficult to install on a machine that had less than a gig.
Id say archlinux might suit you better, it's a very nice distro indeed.
In the end though when you start getting into all these distros in a big way, they are basically all the same, just mod it whatever way you want :)
I see archlinux as the new slackware
and gentoo as the best linux distro (i.e functionally replacing debian)
Obviously there are vast differences in the policies and such, but basically thats kinda what I think.
But BazH , for sure go for one of these distros, I thought, u were a big *nix nerd already. Oo
wow, how did you stick with the pains of rpm for so long. :)

I second IpCop. Doesn't do SMB shares, but built for the rest of your requirements. 20 minute setup plus secure. simple to use Web interface to control.

Don't think the current version has the scsi module but thats no huge problem, all checked out some of the ipcop add ons, just the ticket.

I'll be testing 2-3 flavours later this month.
