hi all, i drive a micra and own an old beetle. im 24 with a full license. the insurance companies wouldnt insure me initially on the beetle but once i had bought and insured the micra and had an existing policy they had no problem transferring the insurance directly to the beetle at no extra charge. i was delighted but by that stage the beetle was not road worthy. now the nct on the micra is just up and im sick of driving a new-ish car. i'd love to get one of the big old jags but dont know where to start. i would naturally assume that i wouldnt get insurance on it because of my age but when they offered the transfer on the beetle (while i still had a provisional license) i got completely confused. can someone my age drive a jag feasibly ? i dont mind insuring it as a second car as my insurance on the micra is cheap anyway since i passed my test ???? i dont know what to do, i've 2 months till nct is up

    Welcome!

Was your policy on the Beatle a classic policy? It would be unusual to get one if you're under 25. If you had a previous policy they might insure you again on another classic easy enough.

Best thing to do is to pick a car on CBG or somewhere that you are interested in and call some places. Are you nearly 25? This will open the door for you to a lot of classic policies, and an old jag would be pricey to insure as a main driver.

Check out the sticky thread at the top for insurance companies to try.

    G'luck!

the policy for the beetle was a straight swop for the micra one so no i dont think it was a classic one. but i dont mind it not being a classic policy once i can afford it. i was reading some of the older threads about the insurance companies and the one from irish vintage sounds a little too good to be true. is there an age limit on it ? :)

I think if your not going to qualify for a classic policy, an old jag will be assessed like any other car, i.e. on engine size, cost etc. This probably isn't a good thing.

The Irish Vintage Soc policy is restricted by age, (what age I can't remember - but older than you ;)... Anyone remember?) Will check the policy doc they sent me later on if I remember.

Also you are restricted to 2,000 miles a year and must have another main driver car (which you do).

Also don't forget tax will be huge on a Jag unless it's over 30 years old.

    Have fun :)
