I am considering reinstalling XP home on a machine I am having some probs with...
There is a lot of software installed & I don't fancy going over all that again..
The master drive is partitioned C /D windows is installed on c & all other software is on D.
If I reinstall windows on C how does this affect registry entries relating to the programmes on D..If I back up the registry etc I could be importing the probs onto the new installation.... Any suggestions wellcome!

That's the problem alright. If you're going to take the pain of a reinstall, then take a little more and do it right. Nice clean registry; all the service packs; anti-virus up to date; latest windows updates - good, wholesome machine you'd take home to momma.

As for the partitioning of a single drive - there are several arguments for doing this and several against. I'm taking it that there's more than one physical drive in the machine ("master drive is partitoned..."). Maybe just make it one drive - there's no real advantage of splitting it at all - unless you're storing music/video or some other data that isn't affected by registry changes/re-installs - as you are now.
If you're installing games/appliations onto D, which I think you are, it's a waste of a drive letter.

Best thing to do is get your install just the way you want with just the software you want and trust installed and then ghost it (or other similar application) for easy recovery later.

You could try a reinstall over your existing installation, that should let you keep all your software installed. It often doesn't fix problems that are requiring a reinstall but sometimes it does. Keep in mind that you'll have to reinstall any windows updates or patches.

Probobly worth a try first. But how will windows handle installing XP sp1 over a version with sp2 installed

It should install it as SP1, it'll overwrite any files that were updated for SP2, any extra files that came as part of SP2 will probably still be there but there won't be any references to them so they won't come into play. Of course you'll need to install SP2 again to get it back, and you'll probably have to configure the firewall and stuff again.
