Merrion freeroll last night....

I was playing well all night didn't need buy in or didn't topup. I got good cards earlier on, doubled up a good few times in the first 20minutes.

    Down to 11 players -

    Blinds were 3k/6k

6 players at my table and 5 at the other.

I'm single blind for 3k, I got delt A,J diamonds.

I think about it as everyone else is folded, decide if there is no raise to me i'll go all in. If I get called I've decent cards and a double up would guarantee me a 110 ticket more or less. I move all-in. I except I'm ahead and I'm expecting a fold.

The big blind thinks about it for a bit and decides to call.

He had K,X clubs. (X being somewhere between 2 and 6)

I'm ahead, I'm ahead after the flop, he gets a flush draw on the turn, he makes he flush on the river.

    I'm out with nothing.

I should have folded them, it was not worth the risk. The top 8 got 100e tickets at the final table, 9th and 10th got entry to some small tournamnets.

The final table was over after a few hands, so the small stacks from my table didnt have to play a hand and got 100e tickets.

At least I made this mistake in a free tournament, I'd be really pissed off if it happened in something i had paid into.

My mate was in a sitNgo tournament so I arsed about for a half hour, he was winning it. I was giving him a lift home.
I was going to offer to pay him the 10e that he paid to enter if he would all-in so i could go home but seeing as he was winning it was unfair to do that.

They started another 7 seater sitNgo so I joined it at 2:45am for 11euro. I managed to build up a big stack with some decent raises, i was playing tight so everyone folded. My mate got knocked out in third so he was now waiting for me.

I got delt K,10 hearts so i raise 200. A guy beside me shows me an ace of hearts and asked had i seen that before i raised. Everyone else was staring trying to work out what i was at. So he was asking me what i had etc..saying his ace was "good". I tell him his ace is only as good as his kicker...

He thinks for a bit and pushes all-in. I decide so i can go home.

He turns over AK offsuit. I turn over the 10 first and everyone assumes i have a pocket pair then i turn over the King. Everyone is shocked at my call. I stand up and point out that i want to go home. He flops a pair of aces, I hit my flush on the river :)

I steal a few more pots, then call an all-in and knock out two more players. Down to 3, there is 70e of a prize for first place.

The next highest in chips knocks out yer man, so its just the two of us left.

I've got about 70% of the chips and he has about 30%.

I asked him does he want to slipt the money, he assumes i'm joking. I tell him i just want to go home, he is more than happy to split the cash as im obvious chip leader. I take my 35e and head off.

    I get home about 3:45am.

Thats my night as I remember it... i might have muddled up some bits of it...

What do ye think of my freeroll all-in? Looking back on it I should have thrown those cards away without any thought.

I don't think you made much of a mistake, with no limpers and in the SB I would have just limped in myself, and push if I catch anything on the flop. If you limped and the BB pushed, that would be a tough decision - with AJd you would be fairly certain of being ahead. That said, we've all been in that position before and the BB flipped over bullets or cowboys!

The fact that is was a freeroll with a flat prize structure makes the decision harder to make - in a regular tournie you would have had no hesitation in playing the hand, particularly is short stacked.

Yawn. Poker to play is fun. Poker to watch on television can also be interesting. Reading about some Joe Soaps "adventures" however is boring at best. I'll give you €35 to not post your 'story' here next time. Thanks

Oh and i'll pay you €35 to not give your 'thoughts' in reply also.

Nice one, Podgeen, up 35euro... well done! smile.gif

You don't give any stack sizes for the AJ hand, which might make a difference to how you played it.

yeah that can be done.pm me next time you have an "exciting" story to tell.

I'll make the first payment if you dont give the stack sizes and prolong the boredom.

My all-in was for 20k (this included my small blind)
The big blind had 26k (and 6k already in for this BB)

The rest of the stacks were around 15 - 30k (i think). I knew top10 were getting paid but i didnt realise that top 8 were getting the same prize.

So everyone at our table were very short stacked compared to the guys at the other table.

Giving the prize structure and the average stack size Vs the blind size I should have folded it.

As Ionapaul said if it were a regular tourney the push would have been a good move as being shortstacked would not have got me anywhere.

Its frustrating to make it through about 120 people and then make one stupid mistake which costs you everything.

So the BB called for over 3xBB, almost all his stack, holding Kx suited on the bubble? That was a crazy move on his part, IMHO. He had to have known you were ahead at that point, particularly if he had followed your play - I know you are a fairly tight player :)

So, do I get €70 now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭podgeen

Yeah I thought it was a very bad call on his behalf, I was ahead until the river. But I should not have put myself in that position to begin with, as the prize structure was quite flat i should have just played my usual tight game.

At least I learnt something from the game :)

AJ diamonds all in without any callers to you is not a bad move IMO,
Because u didnt win doesnt make it a bad call, as it turned out u were miles ahead of K 2-6s u just got outdrawn.

think about it this way u might make to the final table get muck and be forced into a do or die with shabbier cards than AJd.

thats unlucky podgean iwas gutted myself i was down to last 14 with 25k in chips when i got dealt aj suited so i flat called,bb pushes all in,i think about it and call i have him on a steal and to cut a long story short he had 49 offsuit and hit a full house(3 4's and 2 2's) i lost 3 quarters of my stack couldnt believe it!very next hand im short stacked im dealt a2 suited so i go all in cos i was next on big blind so had no choice really norman goes all in with me he had aq offsuit and he beat with his queen high it was just not meant to be....which one were you?i was the young lad with the man city top on i played on both the last two tables cos i got moved. so many people siting tight when it got down to last 20 i could have easily folded my way into the prizes but id rather risk it for the chance of winning the whole thing is that stupid or should i sit tight?its happened in a few tournamnets were i could have folded my way into the prizes but i just hate doing that!
as for 'Papschmir' its a poker forum if you dont want to read about poker why bother coming on in the first place?

Were you sitting in seat one on table2 for a bit? I was the guy in seat3, I was chatting to you for a bit as both of us were similarly low stacked for a while.

Is norman the bald guy who was at table one? I think i have seen him in the fitz wearning a Bus Eireann uniform?

Its a tough one to sit tight or play. I played tight the last thursday in the fitz and ended up going out 13th because the blinds bled me to death. I think last thursday I should have played and sat tight last night :)

Actually I think it might have been you who went all-in with pocket 3s and I called with pocket 4s. I was very short stacked at this stage.
