iPod issues...

Purchased an iPod, its about six months old, never had any problems with it til today, whereby it refuses to play any songs, merely skips to the next track in any playlist, and randomly freezes too... i havent put any new tracks on it or anything, it was working fine up until a few hours ago, but not now...

Anybody have a similar issue, any suggestions as to solutions? iTunes wont detect it, i can hear the hard drive just spinning inside... Is there a way to reset an iPod, as in blank it, back to factory settings type thing?

    Cheers in advance,

    Adam

Hold down the play and pause buttons for 10 seconds until the ipod reboots. That usually fixes it for me.

Maybe this thread should be moved from ah?.

there are two ipod reset methods, the first non-invasive way does not remove any tunes you have.
Just flick the on/off switch on and off a few times, then to on.
Then hold menu and play/pause buttons together, it will reboot and reset.

The second you'll need to put your ipod into disk mode, so that you can reconstruct your iPod's directory block (which in this case would be damaged if you get this symptom). To force disk mode, press the PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons for 5 seconds immediately after resetting the ipod (MENU and PLAY buttons). You should get a "OK to Disconnect" messages with a big checkmark across your screen.

Be careful with the second method, try the first a few times just incase!!

I've had this problem since I got mine. The first method mentioned only fixes it until it happens again. And it's really fricking annoying. I'll try the second tonight but if it doesn't fix it it's getting sent off to the depot, cos after 6 months of this it's really getting on my manboobs.

Ok, alas, I was lulled into a false sense of security! The iPod is well and truly fu(ked! Well, by that i mean it wont start, i get that folder with the exclamation mark, an my pc wont recognise it, it just bogs everything down an eventually crashes completely!

So i'm applyin for repair, anybody any experience with this, how long does it take? And whats the likelihood of just getting a new unit back? (woot!)

I'm fairly certain you'll get a refurbished iPod and your old one will be fixed, wiped and given to someone else.

fade to grey......welcome to the apple "refurbished ipods"! You will for sure get a new refurbed ipod but unfortunatly it will never be the same as your old ipod.

First off its refurbed, so its going to have bollox battery and minor problems (maybe u will be lucky. Depends on what sort of one you get!

trust me i have had about 4 ipods returned to me. All refurbs! Now i get about 3-4 hours of battery life. Thats where ebay comes in and as we speak a brand new 12 hour battery is on its way!

    :D

hmmmm... the battery life has gone to **** on mine...
i was thinking of sending it off for a free repair while its still under warrenty. i might just buy a replacement instead.
prising the case apart looks a bit nerve wracking :o

Why would you do it yourself when its under warranty?

That's strange - I've had 2 iPods returned to me and the battery is fine. Maybe your just using the battery up with the backlight/constantly flicking through songs and therefore using the hardrive?

I don't think you'll have any problems with a refurb - it'll look brand new anyway, so you won't even notice.

What happens if you get a refurb and you had a custom engraving on the back of old one?

Just to add to the chorus, I sent my 3rd Gen 20GB iPod in for repair as the battery was banjoed. Apparently, if the thing is charging to 50% or less of its stated runtime, battery replacement (i.e. getting sent a refurbed iPod) is automatic. The battery life on the one I got back is so-so; it's my first battery-powered hard-disk-based MP3 player, so I don't have much to compare against, but I was expecting more from it. It's a *lot* better than it was, mind you... (the 3Gs have brutal battery life anyway)
