    Shocker

    Brazil holds Argentine footballer

An Argentine footballer has been charged with racially insulting a Brazilian rival during a bad-tempered match in Sao Paulo.

Quilmes defender Leandro Desabato was arrested on the pitch at the end of his team's 3-1 defeat by Sao Paulo.

He allegedly made the remark to striker Grafite during injury time in the first half of the Libertadores Cup match.

Grafite shoved his hand in Desabato's face and was sent off, along with Quilmes midfielder Carlos Arano.

Brazilian police said Desabato was questioned, held overnight and charged with the crime of slander aggravated by racism.

The footballer had a cell to himself, was given standard prison food and allowed to receive a massage, police were quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.

Lawyers acting on his behalf had applied for him to get bail and were awaiting the court's decision.

His Quilmes team mates reportedly decided to stay on in Sao Paulo to support him following Wednesday's match.

    Previous taunts

Sao Paulo president Marcelo Portugal Gouveau said Grafite wanted to take the case all the way and the club backed him.

"The repercussion was big and will serve as an example for the whole world," he said in a radio interview.

But Quilmes coach Gustavo Alfaro said the police had over-reacted.

"This has all been handled in the wrong way," Reuters quoted him as saying.

"It was an unnecessary spectacle (for the police) to come on to the field in front of 50,000 or 60,000 people when the player's pulse rate is still high, he's just lost a game..."

At the first match between the two teams last month in Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo players complained they had been racially insulted by Quilmes supporters. The Argentine team sent a formal apology.
