    Hi All

I am sort of new to Linux, and I'm trying out a Knoppix boot from CD on my laptop.

I love the whole Linux thang, but I just cant get online with Knoppix.

I have an IBM T20, and my broadband account is with EsatBT. The modem is a Prestige 600.

    Any ideas?

The Prestige 600 is a usb modem, you have to use an ethernet adsl modem/router and plug it into the ethernet port on your laptop. Initialy ESAT BT did not offer a free ethernet modem, they do now so if you ask them they may swop it.

So can I use a network card in the laptops PC slot and connect to the Prestige 600 directly?

Or do I have to get a totally different modem?

Stupid question, but why wont Knoppix see the usb modem... is it the lack of a suitable driver in Knoppix?

if the modem is ethernet you should be able to conenct to it no problem.
either by setting a default route to it, route add default gw what.everr.ip.)
    running ppp over it
    or l2tp
depending on the type of setup u got.

Nope, just used the ethernet port on the modem as you suggested and let Knoppix boot from CD.

It detected the modem... no problems!!!

Linux is excellent... I'm loving it already!!! Linux also my thesis topic for my masters.

    Whats a "ricer" btw?

Gentoo ricers. Great community, but a bit prone to silly statments. :D
