Updates are generally released monthly. Rather than downloading them all individually, why not use IE to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download them all there. You'll only have to restart when its done.

Its considered best practise to update anyway. Better safe than sorry and all that jazz...

How many updates did you have to install? There were 6 released this round, so if you left it a couple of months it could be that related updates are conflicting with each other.

They were released yesterday. I can't remember them all, but there was:

    Windows Installer 3.1
    Windows malicious Removal Tool

and a lot of the usual little patches.

Is there any way to check for updates without having auto updates ON and without having to go to the ms update site in your browser?

Trend Micro PC-cillin Antivirus does checks every now and again to make sure you have all the critical updates available on the MS site.

I find it is easier to turn auto-updates off as it regularly crashed on the installing phase.

Just go to 'Start' -> 'All Programs' -> 'Windows Update' and pick which ones you want to install yourself.

    Auto-Update sucks
