Does anyone know how much it is to replace a lost one? Will they do it on the spot or do you have to wait weeks?

How do you apply for one? I turn 18 next month and want to get one. I've heard that there is a long waiting time to get one

Go to the local police offy and fill in the form with photos and id but u have to be 18 first.

Is it still €6? I remember emailing them when I was 18 asking about it...prompt reply too.

I got my second one free. You still need passport photos as far as I can remember, but you just wander down to your local station and let them know. It gets sent out to you in about 2-3 weeks (which is 6 in real terms).

You could do the same. Just go down with different pics, either way have a chat to the garda in the station, chances are they'll be sound about it.

Slightly different question, but still relatedto Garda IDs - is it actually worth getting one? I'm 18 and I tend to use my passport to get into places, I've never had a problem with it. I just never got round to getting a Garda ID. Is there anywhere that only accepts them or is my passport fine?

passport is ok, until u lose it and are going away the following saturday. Garda ID is just safer and easier to replace if lost/stolen. plus easier to carry around :D

Although we have the same avatar (and I thought I was unique) I'll answer that - I've always found it worthwhile having one. It just stops all the hassle that comes with bringing your passport around with you. You can lose your garda ID, and no biggie. You might be in the situation where you are going away to Spain, for example, and go out here in Ireland a week before and lose your passport (its happened to mates of mine).

In answer to the second part...
Section 15 introduces an entirely new provision and inserts a new section in the 1988 Act (a new section 34A). It requires that persons aged 18 to 20 carry an "age document" in order to be in the bar of licensed premises after 9.00 p.m. An age document may be one of the following: a Garda age card; passport; identity card of a member state of the European Communities; driver's licence; a document prescribed in regulations to be made by the Minister. An age document is not required in order to gain access to other parts of the premises. This new obligation to produce an age document in order to gain admission to bars is intended to assist licensees in complying with provisions relating to underage consumption of alcohol and to assist Gardaí in enforcing the law.

Intoxicating Liquor Act, 2003, section 25.

  • Ughh thanks guys, I was trying to convince myself that taking my passport was fine and I'm going to Paris next week :(

Don't know if the quality of printing on the cards has improved lately - mines quite old now - but the hologram on mine faded terribly. My local doesn't accept Garda ID if they're even slightly faded/damaged as bouncers seem to regard them as being easy to fake. I always carry my drivers licence now.

Don't expect to get in everywhere without any backup just because you have one of these

BTW I've seen fake Garda ID's that look much more convincing than my real one

Well the funny thing is is that the bouncer can refuse you based on passport. But he can't refuse a garda id and he has to get a garda to verify it if he really belives it to be fake.

I think my garda id is soooo handy tho. It fits in my wallet and i always have it cos i used to forget my passport halfway to the club and be like 'doh!'.

Altho ive resigned myself to the fact that no picture i'm in makes me look good so i guess i'll just stick with the crappy one i have on it.

Its a good idea the whole garda id....it means ur less likely to loose passport. I used to hate leaving bag down in case someone robbed it back in the ol days and i lost my passport as well as my purse.
