Hmmm I would also be interested in hearing about this. I suspect it is jogging, but I have a slight knee injury which can give me trouble after prolonged jogging, so if I hit the exercise bike or the real bike will I still get a good cardio in comparison to jogging?

What kind of knee injury is it? I had a "knee" injury before that was due to iliotibial band syndrome (the muscle down the side of my upper leg was too tight). Cycling would make it worse.

As far as I know, you have to cycle for longer than you would if you were jogging because generally there's less effort involved. However I'd imagine it all depends on terrain, speed etc.

It's a getting a smack across the kneecap with a hurley stick injury. :) It's not noticeable unless I'm down on my knees (errr....) for a while when it locks up a little, or when I'm jumping (eg. when I used to jump for a ball in Gaelic football) and land, or put too much strain on it (eg. squats). Dunno what is officially wrong with it tho, but cycling seems to be no problem for me.

I suppose I could build up the jogging to get it back in order.. as when I was fitter, it wasn't a problem at all to run for miles, so maybe it's a weakness in the ligaments or something from a sedentary lifestyle. :(

Toning is done with more directed muscle exercises and weights. Jogging will if anything not help "toning".

Jogging and cycling is for cardio and heart/lung development. It won't help with muscle toning but will shed pounds.

Rule of thumb --For fitness - you need to cycle 5 miles at a reasonable pace to match jogging 1 mile in say
    8 minutes.

Jogging imo is best though i do like the spinning classes for a good intense session on the bike

I agree with previous post on 'toning' - use weights or forget about it also your have to train your whole body and can't spot reduce by just doing ab exercises

yes but you have to be carefull with jogging cos if you are running on the path your knees are absorbing a lot of impact, not a good thing. Better jogging in a park. Cyclking has the advantage that it is about the most efficent method of transport in dublin, and is the cheapest.

    You what?

Weight lose is the only thing that will help 'toning' . Any sort resistance weights will only increase muscle mass under the fat.

Don't I know it! I have got to have the worst knees in the world cause of it, they crack constantly, it's worst going up stairs and stuf, but I know its from jogging when I was younger....

Wrong footwear. If you have the right runners - with support in the right places..then this wouldnt have happened.

    And what exactly is 'toning'

my experience is that jogging is best for weight loss over time BUT its harder on your body...

u may get back or knee problems - in my case i had a flare upfrom toes i disconnected about 20 years ago

i switched to spinning when they started bothering me (after 18 mths) and i can get better calorie burn from slightly longer sessions but in my case it has to be pretty hard spinning - i do 30 mins and burn 280 cals - that may be wimpy cals to u guys !!

Muscle tone strictly speaking is resisdual tension in the muscle. If you tense your bicep hard and have a reasonable amount of body fat and muscle you'll see a tensed toned muscle. When you relax you have your normal arm back. A toned mucle is one that when relaxed still has a small amount of tension - making them look good.

In order to see this however you need to have a reaonable amount of body fat and a reasonable amount of muscle. To loose body fat, most people go with some form of cardio work, to get toned muscle tissue most people do weights.

Bud Jefferies has really strong well toned muscle but he can't see them because he also has a large amount of bodyfat. On the other hand Sonia O'Sullivan has low body fat but also low muscle tone so she doesn't look partiularly buff either.

It all a question of balance.

    Hope this helps.

    Boru.

    Toned muscle is just muscle..
To see it you need to drop the body fat.
