The cost of CD's in this country is fùcking a complete rip off, when you see how much it costs the CD record companies to create a CD. Although Play.com and CDWOW have made it a bit cheaper, but still CD prices are still way too high! Its no surprising that everyone (almost) has downloaded illegal music.

what about those filesharing things? i dont know if its necessarily illegal but as far as i know its not. its just like getting a loan of a cd off a friend but keeping it!!

Copyright law prohibits loaning also, of copyrighted material. Even public laibrarys must obtain permission for loaning books and cds.

Yup I download the odd one.
Justification to self 1: I've bought many a cd based on hearing downloaded music.
Justification to self 2: CD's are extortionately priced.

Not really fair to call them do-gooders, it is morally wrong to the same extent stealing a cd is.

I disagree, the retailer/record company/whoever is actually 'losing' money if you go in and steal a cd, that cd cost money to be produced, the cd media, packaging, delivery to shop, etc. whereas when downloading an album from the internet, nobody is actually 'losing' money unless the downloader was actually going to go out and purchase the cd (and I doubt most people who download mp3 albums would have gone out and bought the originals if they couldn't download it)

I've downloaded a suprisingly small amount of music from the net, but have absolutely no problem with people downloading music 24/7 if they like.

Do you have any idea how much a CD costs to make? (and no im not talking about the physical disc, im including all the artist fees, production, distribution, promotion, retail fees). Everybody would break even at about €2 per cd*, yet you can pay as much as €30 for one... 1500% profit. Daylight robery. I'm all for consumer rights, and you'll find that prices in the industry will plummet as a result of this when it is finally accepted that access to free music is unstopable, so they will begin to compete with it, and offer you value for money at about €7-10 for a album with the manual, collector items etc. to encourage people to prefer to buy for those little extras than download it.

Spare a thought though for the small artists/ record companys/ promoters who you are absolutely ripping off though, and make a promise to buy something of theirs sometime to pay them back...Karmas a bitch :p

*May be an absolute lie, that could possibly be made up, and may be completely in-acurate. An un-educated guess, which if wrong, i will lie about having any knowledge of saying it, and possibly run away.

Funnily enough thats an interesting point, which was made somewhere else on boards, from a different point of view, which applies in my case. The ones really losing out are the already millionaire fat-cats that can well afford ai! think of all the artists that have sold millions or tens of millions of albums? now thinkm if they even made E2 per cd sold they'd still be filthy feckin rich i assure you!

However with the aid of the internet, in particular of late, i've found a lot of bands i had never even heard of a month ago, and upon listening to their stuff i have gone out and bought several of the albums, even after downloading half of them already! Bottom line is everybody likes to own the cd of a particular band they like, you feel better about listening to it etc.

So in my case, more of my money will be going to those that are desperately trying to push their way onto a chock-fulla-sh1t market, with more talent in their collectives left testicle/tit than the average manufactured pop crap "band" we so love to churn out every year for one single! Excuse me a moment while I vomit.

    End rant. :D
