Stolen Phone

Was at a conversation class at the library tonight, as I was walking home realized my backpack was open and my phone had been taken. Just to make sure it wasn't lost I called it and nothing happened but a beep after about 15 secs so I guess whoever took it removed the SIM? I'm really upset cos I saved for months to buy it and it has all my numbers on (and a lot of them are so recent I have no copy) but what should I do?

Should I go into the 02 shop tomorrow and ask them to block the phone? Is it possible to get my old number back right away? How much is a new SIM card to put into my old phone?

It happened me once with meteor, had to pay 7.50 for a new sim with the same number, came in about 3-4 days, not sure about O2 though

    First off, bad luck!

Your best bet for blocking the phone is to call customer care, they should have a record of the IMEI number and can ensure it's not usable (in Ireland) without reprogramming.

The new sim should be free o fairly cheap, if they try to charge you, considering porting to another network..

  • Do you think it's possible to get the SIM right away? It sounds so silly but I can't manage without no phone at all (work etc) especially since I'm going out tomorrow night and going home by myself.
I am so angry. Especially cos I'm the most cautious person alive and never lose anything. I can't think for the life of me how it happened.
May pickpockets die a slow and painful death

I don't suppose there's any way of retrieving numbers from a SIM through the website?

Apparently it costs over 10e to get the same number back
atleast for pay as you go anyway,

Obviously get O2 to lock the phones IMEI number :D

Im not sure but iv heard of people being able to retrieve numbers from stolen sims through their agency-dealy (O2), I had a phone stolen once, it was 2 weeks old, was at a basketball match, wrapped my phone in my t-shirt to keep it save, put it and the wallet at the bottem of my bag, left it on court-side, came back to it a bit later to discover both wallet and phone missing and neither my school or that one would do anything about it!

Best to keep the same number as since you don't know the new numbers you put in, they may try and contact you and then you from your old number. Maybe o2 would be able to give you a list of all the numbers you ever called/texted?

If you still have the box or documentation from the phone you can have it blacklisted over the phone. Call O2 on 1909 and ask them to black list the phone and give them your 15 digit IMEI number for the phone. this will block the phone from being used on all three networks.

You said you were at a class of some sort, you might even know the person who took the phone. find out if the Library has CCTV and if so ask if you can review the tapes. If it turns out you do know the person, hang em high.

I don't think O2 charge you for a replacement sim card if your phone has been stolen. if you were to have a whole phone replaced under insurance then there is usually a €30 charge.

You might also be able to retrieve some of your friends numbers by getting the customer care person to give you a list of your recently dialled calls. or these might be availible on the O2 website if you are registered with it.

O2 don't usually charge for the first lost SIM on prepay (TBH once you ask nice they don't ask for any subsequent ones either).

They'll do it there on the spot for you.

That's why I'm still 02 and not Meteor or Voda, O2 are nicer to deal with for prepay customers.

  • Sorry to hear about your phone Samantha Brave Refrigeration. I can't believe some people especially thiefs and scumbags.

I'm especially upset cos it was almost definitely one of the conversation group. Now I think about it, a woman brushed past me and touched my waist/shoulders even though there was space for her to get past. At the time I thought nothing of it but it must have been her. The saddest thing is, I knew the place was gonna be full of Spanish people so I made a special effort to hide my wallet inside the bag and keep it under my feet. I felt so bad for even thinking like that, but I've just been proven right. (And don't call me a racist, I'm half Spanish myself). I wonder if she went there especially to steal or if she was pushing her luck. I'm gonna ask the library to check the CCTV in case she comes back.

I'm just so sad that you can't trust anyone. I hate being suspicious of everyone around me, I was bad enough before and now I'll never feel comfortable around strangers again.

BTW because I bought a new phone, I was to get 10 Euro credit every month, if I keep the same number will I still get it?

  • Thanks for the help everyone.

Is that if you keep the same number as well? Can they do that on the spot?

I've managed to get on the O2 website and it gives a list of recently called/texted numbers, with the people's numbers. I think I managed to work out whose numbers were which by trying to remember who I texted and the exact time I texted them. I'm feeling a bit better now cos I could have lost contact with them forever, agh!

vodafone don't charge for replacement sim cards either to the best of my knowledge, at least they didnt when I had one replaced. after a phone theft.

O2 - Yes, same number - on the spot. The old SIM is rendered invalid (protects your account).

Vodafone RTG (ready to go) customers were (still are AFAIK) charged about €25 for a new SIM , same number, takes a week to get.

Meteor charge too. don't know the drill there.

Some b!tch stole my phone from my locker in work and then work said there was nothing they could do and wouldnt even check the cameras!

went up to meteor straight away and they gave me a new sim and said €7.50 please and i was like eh oh well they stole my money as well... so he said grand thats no problem and just gave me it. Still had my credit and all.

Got a replacement Vodafone SIM on-the-spot in the Square in Tallaght, after my g/f's phone was snatched in the centre while she was on a call. They cancelled the old SIM, blacklisted the IMEI and gave her a replacement SIM with the same amount of call credit on it- there and then, free of charge, on the spot. I think they have some discretionary leeway (she was rather upset, and I was rather shaken- having had chased the guy who grabbed it (have no idea what I thought I'd do if I did catch the bastard).

You can buy a little device for backing up your SIM card in the carphone warehouse. Its about a 15 Euro- and given the amount of phones being stolen these days, a bloody good idea......

The credit is stored on the account, not the SIM, so the credit will always be maintained, no matter how many times you change SIM :)
