LDAP Mail Server Question

    A server i'm building at the minute is using LDAP to authenticate users both for Samba and for normal unix login with PAM and NSS. Seen as i'm using PAM and NSS, will users appear to be "normal" to the Mail Server? I don't imagine wanting to host mail for non-system users so virtual hosting abilities aren't really an issue. I currently know how to use sendmail but i'm not really for or against any MTA - which one works well with LDAP in this configuration?

    Red Alert, first off can you clarify a few items: Is the machine you are building going to be a mail server itself - and are you asking for advice on what type of mail server software would work well with LDAP? What OS are you using, and what type of LDAP server are you using?....

    Yep, the mail server is going to be running on the same machine as the LDAP server. Currently I can log on as any of the LDAP accounts and receive a home directory etc. I'm using Gentoo with Kernel 2.6 and OpenLDAP. From what I can see Sendmail, Postfix, Courier and Exim seem to support LDAP, just wondering if anyone has such a setup working?

    Personally I prefer either of these combinations....

    Postfix -> Cyrus -> LDAP
    or
    Postfix -> Dovecot -> LDAP

    Some relevant readme's...
