    STinks dont it!
Actually I find pubs smell far worse since the smoking ban... I was out on saturday night in a pub that shall remain nameless, but urgh, the smell of B.O. and farts was overpowering... I couldn't wait to leave. :(
What's the thinking here? Just because people have stopped smoking it means you don't have to provide any kind of ventilation?!

Yes! Killing yourself slowly sure is fun!

Actually no. I, also, can't even bear walking behind a smoker in the street. YUK!

lol yeah i love the way people complain that now pubs dont reek of smoke, all you can smell is B.O & farts. Most people spend 8 hours a day stuck in an office with just as many people as youd find in a pub, they dont leave at the end of the day going 'god all i could smell in there was farts all day'

Hey, you weren't in that pub, I swear to God it was ghastly... obviously the little issue of carcinogens comes into play if you want to look at it objectively, but if you'd like to isolate the issue of smell alone, it comes down to whether you think farts and b.o. smell better than ciggarette smoke... so which is it?
Or you can continue to guffaw from your oh-so-serious high horse as if this is some kind of stuffy-arsed debate.

    Agree with donkey.
In a club one night with a mate. a few nice women close by we we eyeing up. A guy walked between us and let a stinker. The women then fled like there was no tomorro. Later that same guy was having a great time talking to the women that we were eyeing up.
Got to hand it to the dirty bast4rd. He did come out on top.

    Not this pub.
Picture it... saturday night, dublin city center, no seats left, you're holding your pint at your chest because there's nowhere to put it down, nor is there even enough room infront of you to hold it any other way... you want to buy another drink, but you don't think you'll be able to crowd-surf your way to the bar... the ceilings are as low as those found in an average living room.
I didn't believe the hype of smelly pubs either until I walked into this place, especially upstairs.
BTW, there's no way you'd find an office that cramped, not even in India.

This is very true. It's different from an office as in an office your at the same desk all day but in a nightclub you can waltz around and escape blame.

But at least your don't go home with your clothes smelling of body odours. You would spend 5 minutes in a certain pub and your clothes would reek of smoke

I used to smoke, I still have the odd spliff here and there but it always amazed me why people smoke. I understand its a stress reliver etc etc.. but the con's far outweigh the pro's. Heck, even if a see a nice looking girl walking down the street and she sparks up I immediately get turned off

Apparently the 'stress relief' is only the relief you feel from satisfying the nicotine withdrawl from your previous ciggies... not necessarily a calming effect over all... calming the smokers jitters if you will.
People smoke because they're addicted to nicotine... backed up by countless warped mental attachments to ciggies.

A rather similiar situation arose for me during the time ya were allowed to smoke
Bout 2 years ago me and my cousin, drunk as fook, are chattin up these 2 birds in a nightclub, tryna outdo each other by puttin the other down infront of the girls. Anyway, I was puttin him down 6 feet i was doin so good and the birds were laughin..... therefore my cousins only reaction is to stub his cigarette into my hand and make me scream like a wee girl
Though i dont smoke cigs i had prev opposed the ban, more nannying from the gov i thought. That incident changed my opinion on yis smokin bastids.

Now the ban is great, i dunno if it is at all related but i stopped getting hangovers around April last year, when i was 17, regardless of how much i drink. Ive had like 3 since, and two of them were caused by a dirty pint(and for those that dont believe in the mythical dirty pint, those who have experienced it know if its existence. A normal hangover leaves you with a bit of a rough stomach, tiredness and general miserableness. A dirty pint is like a severe flu, afftecting your ability to walk comfortably) .
Its great not havin them :)

No smoking isn't cool. It's a bad habit. From giving up and not suceeding i can see how a non smoker would see it as a turn off. Us smokers don't realise the cigarette break is so over powering.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 745 ✭✭✭misswex

Its not cool at all, its disgusting in fact!! Used to be horrible in pubs with ashtrays overflowing with cigarettes ends!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,345 ✭✭✭Velvet Vocals

Ok, here's my thoughts... I used to smoke, I smoked for about 13 years and while I knew it was really, really bad for me I loved it. But I'm singer and it was fu*king with my voice so I had to give it up. I'm off them about 3 years now and don't miss them.... but sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I could have one. I mean, if you take away the smelliness, the dry mouth, the racking coughs, the damaged lungs/heart/brain,if you forget all that and just take a deep, long drag...... Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh LOVELY FAGS!

And in movies.... it's looks so COOL!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭BolBill

Smoking is cool, end of story. Those that say it isn't are just ex smokers that think they are great for quitting or non smokers that are nerds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

I have no fundamental problem with anyone smoking so my comments here are in relation to people thinking of taking it up or just started. You might get away with a few years of good health but ultimately it gets to you. Stop before you you start.

Not cool at all. It's definitly the biggest turn off going as well. Any smoking girl, i've no interest in.

i find its neither a plus or minus

    Lets see now, with cigs:

    Your breath smells.
    your clothes smell.
    your skin smells.
    your hair smells.
you look like a tool sucking on a small stick in the cold.
If you smoke inside you choke everyone else.
Every now and then you cough a lung up.
You may need said lung operated on when you have several types of cancer.

Yep, it so cool alright

    I concur.

Sometimes I might think a girl a turn-on until she lights up. Me willy immediately adopts a jelly-like consistency.

Honestly, since the ban has come in, my body can't handle even tiny bits of cigarette smoke. I feel like puking even when I'm near someone puffing away.

    So, no, it's not cool.

It might not be cool, but it does make you look hard.

Indeed, 'tis even too immature for ME , NO....smoking is not cool, but some idiots are using this as an excuse for them making a stupid mistake in life and taking up smoking, well done....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,823 ✭✭✭Horsefumbler

Yes it is. No denying it. I don't even smoke and I think that. It's the main reason people start smoking, to look cool.

to look cool lol.you mean because they are weak and 9(children may think it's cool because the 'cool' kids do it and the 'cool' kids cos older 'cool' kids do it-knacks cos they're well hard) and they cave in to others around them,'go on don't be a fag.'.

I neither know nor particularly care whether it's cool or not, but I do enjoy it. Anyway if you do anything because it's considered cool or uncool you may need to get out more. The only "cool" thing to be is an individual not a sheep.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,284 ✭✭✭pwd

It doesn't make people look hard. Levels of cortisol in smoker's body's prevent them from developing strong muscles. Smoke before you are fully grown and - well - you won't be.
It can help you deal with stress in the short term, although it does actually make you considerably more stressed in general if you smoke. It increases your concentration and your ability to remember things.
