ive bought a new 300 gig hdd to back up data from my pc onto .

theonly problom tho is when i go to do a full format of the drive within windows it crashes .

the drive gets detected etc.. just fine its just during the formatting ( about 15 seconds in ) that it will crash .

    win xp sp1

Might be worth looking for a low level checking utility from the hard drive manufacturer. Usually uses freedos and boots from floppy or cd.

Just to rule out this before starting on windows.

try the manufactutresr site for a formatting tool,
maxtor have maxblast , not sure about the rest.

are your formatting to ntfs or fat?
does your computer support large drives yet? - check for a bios update from the manufacturer

should support it . i dont see why not . ive been using max blast but it says drive formatted in under 10 seconds . which just dosnt seem right to me

    scandisk show any errors?
    computer management show drive ok?
try booting a linux disc, and formatting from cfdisk

    not sure,

    ive never had problems,
justhook it up, go to comp management in control panel, and thats it,
i guess it doesn take to long actually.
have you tried a smaller drive to test?

    first 2 things to do:
try another drive in this pc,
try this drive in another pc.

should narrow the problem down fairly quickly.
