In the absence of a medical board i think this is the most suitable place

I have contacts that are Left yee -1.00 and right eye is -2.75 . Does anyone know what that would equal in terms of 6/6 , 6/9, 6/12, or 6/18 eyesight, or would it be worse than that?
Cant afford to go to opticians and need to know for an interview if my eyesight would be good enough. 6/18 is the highest they will accept. 6/6 is perfect vision i think.

    Any help?
    thanks

Tbh your eyesight isn't that bad- I'm a -5.75 left and -6.25 right

The 6/60, 6/36 scale relates to the regular scale in a doctors surgery- where you try to read the lines from a distance of about 6 meters. The top line, normally with a single letter (normally A) if correctly identified, relates to 6/60, the second line down relates to 6/36, then 6/24, 6/18, 6/12, 6/9, 6/6, 6/5 etc

6/12 standard overall is the current standard for acceptance to the Gardai (without corrective lenses), or if you wear glasses or contact lenses 6/36 without the corrective lenses.

There is not an accepted "perfect vision"- some people apparently can score 6/5, 6/4 (and better)........

Also- the term "perfect vision", itself, is a bit of a misnomer- as vision refers to the ability to process meaning from eyesight. There are many factors, including several that may be psychological moreso than physical, that may render someone without difficulty in processing imagery, difficulties in drawing meaning from what they are actually looking at.

Optics are a very interesting subject, I'm reading Optics by Hecht and Zajac at the moment (photography including trick photography by lense manipulation is one of my hobbies)......

Sorry, this has nothing to do with anything but... I remmember doing my eye exam for my license and I was reading the letters on the screen fine at the beginning, but he made them smaller until the letters were a blur and I could not make them out, so i was there guessing the letters, I was sure I was going to fail, having never realised bfore I was so blind. I was relieved when he said "ok, good, you dont need to be able to see these letters to be able to drive anyway".

Are u sure about this requirement? It says on Garda website that u have to be

The vision standard requirement of a Garda trainee is Binocular Vision of not less than 6/9, 6/12 unaided by glasses or contact lenses, with normal color vision.

Just want to know cause mate is going for test

Yes- a better reading of that is- not less than 6/9 in either eye, and 6/12 overall with both eyes if you do not wear glasses with normal colour vision.
I.e. your overall vision can be worse, than the worse of either of your two eyes (either of which can be up to 6/9, and combined cannot be worse than 6/12).

    Hope I explained that ok.
If you're not sure- ring one of the official opthalmic testers and they should be better able to explain.

I believe the details for people wearing corrective lenses are also as I listed (but confirm with an official source!!!)
