DSL not working properly since Upgrade (IOLBB+)

    Hey, ever since this morning my DSL has been somewhat... broken...

    My current stats are as follows:
    DSL Status: UP
    DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
    DSL Path Mode: INTERLEAVED
    Downstream Rate: 1312 Kbps
    Upstream Rate: 128 Kbps
    Downstream Margin: 6 db
    Upstream Margin: 22 db
    Downstream Line Attenuation: 63
    Upstream Line Attenuation: 31
    Downstream Transmit Power: 0
    Upstream Transmit Power: 0

    The connection is working for approx 1-2 minutes before it drops and has to be re-synched. Usually it works for no more than 30 seconds.
    Repeat as required.

    Basically it looks like my line cant handle the higher speeds, but it's not finding a level it's happy with, I didnt have too many problems with the 512k (it dropped sometimes but usually for no more than a few hours, and was always 512k steady).

    Eh, what can I do? is anyone else experiencing this?
    I'm in beaumont, 01-837XXXX, I think i'm on Coolock exchange

    Thanks,
    Igy

    My problems are not quite as bad as yours but I also seem to have an intermittent dropping off/connection dying problem. It's not every few minutes but every half and hour or more I may be browsing or I may have some torrents going and all of a sudden I get page load errors and/or my torrents just die out :(
    Downstream Upstream
    Line Status ADSL Link Speed 2048 kbps 128 kbps
    SNR 1.0 dB 0.0 dB
    ATEN 52 dB 31 dB
    Line Error ADSL layer FEC 0 0
    CRC 2971 1
    ATM layer HEC 2362 6

    My SNR was 2.5dB just 10 minutes ago! I don't know what's going on but I don't think my line is up to carrying 2Mb :(

    From Eircom: a server has died in west Dublin and has fcked up a lot of connections

    Igy,

    Downstream Margin: 6 db
    Downstream Line Attenuation: 63
    =========================================
    You have a very low margin aka SNR...lots of noise for your signal...a value in the teens would help with your disconnections.
    But AFAIK it is still usable

    What is worrying me is your Downstream Line Attenuation at 63 db.
    This is very high...actually the highest Ive seen for broadband.
    At this level Broadband is very unreliable!!!

    Honestly I dont think your line is stable enough to handle anything faster than 512k.
    You probable just shaved the test for Broadband IMHO.

    Margins/SNR less than 5dB spells syncing trouble, and attenuation greater than 50dB = dodgy, greater than 60db = f***ed :-)

    Its as simple as what JNive has said Igy.

    You were damn lucky to even get approved by eircom!!!

    Im talking to a guy on the Tramore Exchange who is reporting "disconnects every 20mins, wild speed bursts and then sudden slow down"...

    As is said in other threads there's currently a lack of bandwidth at some major exchanges, smaller exchanges such as greystones are not effected.

    Bray seems to be affected however it just seems to be pings not the acctual downloading.

    It could be due to us all testing out our speeds, we is putting a strain on the exchanges.

    Actually lets blow them up with our downloading at one time thing :):):)

    I seem to get disconnected at least 2/3 times a day on IOLBB Plus. My router is showing these figures for my line quality. Are these bad?

    Down Up
    SNR 6.5 dB 0.0 dB
    ATEN 48 dB 29 dB

    Can Eircom fix this?

    Lockup

    Your SNR is what is more than likely causing loss of synchro with the CO.

    A value of 6.5 db is the absolute minimum for synchro.
    Value of above 10 db wouldbe much more acceptable.

    A value of 5 db would have been an automatic failure on the eircom tests for broadband if you were interested!

    AFAIK it could be faulty telco wiring in your house or possible your telephone wire length from the master socket is too long, if you are using a very long one that is.

    BugBlaster,

    Ive typed up a good tutorial on this:

    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2579121&postcount=2

    Above is from the perspective of a ZyXEL 623 user!!!

    finally remembered to get into the advanced settings on the Zytel modem.... dbl click the logo when holding down the shift and ctrl keys

    actualBitrateFarInt= 128 kbit/s
    actualBitrateFarFast= 0 kbit/s
    actualBitrateNearInt= 2048 kbit/s
    actualBitrateNearFast= 0 kbit/s
    relCapacityOccupationUpstr= 20 %
    relCapacityOccupationDnstr= 26 %
    noiseMarginUpstr= 24.0 dB
    noiseMarginDnstr= 26.0 dB
    outputPowerDnstr= 9.0 dBm
    outputPowerUpstr= 0.5 dBm
    attenuationUpstr= 11.0 dB
    attenuationDnstr= 17.0 dB

    how do those details look??? me im no techy but i usually do not have any trouble with the connection

    Hi,

    BugBlaster - your numbers seem fine, you shouldn't have any problems at all.

    For the people with connection problems - have any of you been on to IOL or Eircom about it? what did they say?

    I'm curious to know as with most of you it's a line noise problem. This is caused by either a bad line or that you live too far away from the exchange. Eircom should fix the line, if that's possible, or you'll have your speed decreased.

    RADSL - Rate Adaptive DSL. If your DSL connection was okay at 512k it should still be okay now. If not there is a problem.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭julius

    The Adaptive part in RADSL would be shown in your synch settings.

    If your router synchs at 2048/128 then RADSL is not the cause of you only getting 1024 speeds.
