Do you mean a SMB/CIFS server as in Windows NT/2000 Server or Mac OS X Server or Linux/Samba.

I have no problems here with the latter, never tried with a Windows Server though !! Have you got utomatic Login enabled to a non admin account ? I think this will stop it from working, not 100% though.

    Nope not using automatic login...
I don't know if its a samba problem on my mac, cause i can't connect to any SMB linux servers, and it doesn't remember an usernames or passwords for accessing samba on windows machines... its strange...

IIRC OS X doesn't support encrypted passwords with Samba. This wrecked my head a while back.

I noticed there was a few Samba fixes in 10.3.8, but the update broke my bloody touchpad on the laptop so I need to archive & install before I can try again.

Samba has supported encrypted passwords since version 2.* and I think if you can log on to a windows NT4 SP3 or later server/client where they're encrypted by default then it does support encrypted.I have Samba 3 on my linux box here and it plays fine with OS X Client and Server 10.3.8 and has done since 10.2.8. AFAIK OS X now has Samba 3 by default.

How do you connect to SMB servers - linux/windows without a password ? Have you ever been able to ?

I assume you've configured HD/Applications/Utilities/Directory Access - SMB - for the correct Workgroup and WINS server (if applicable) and that the account name you are using is "allowed " to log on to Windows servers.

Try the above steps and create a new user account on OS X and permit it to log on to windows servers. Turn on Windows filesharing in the Sharing CP and be sure you have created a similar account on the Server end be it Linux or Windows. Then let us know how you've got on.

my mac picks up the work group fine and i'm able to mount smb shares from an NT4 SP6 machine, and also fine with any other version of windows. We have a number of linux boxes in here, mostly suse, and to my recollection it won't mount any of those shares. They all use the PDC for authentication, and i can mount the shares in windows fine.

Do you need to supply a username and password each time you access the NT4 machines? Is this the same username and password you enter on boot up ? The Mac can't join a windows domain in the same way a Windows machine can, it can only access shares available on the network provided it has privileges.

Up until yesterday I needed to provide a password to access my linux/samba shares (I don't use keychain) after the recent security update installed yesterday I don't need to as long as the login username and password entered at startup is the same as those required to access the shares.

I use a different username and password to my mac, the account has sufficient priviledges as i can mount the samba shares and its an administrator account, its just that my mac doesn't remember it, when i unmount it and mount it again its forgotten...
You'd think a system administrator could solve this! lol creating a NT4 account for the same user would be an option but i'd prefer not to do it...
If i open up keychain i can find the appropiate username and password stored for the correct server... Keychain just does 'fill in the blacks'...

A head scratcher this one !!!

I'm running Mandrake 10.1 with SAMBA 3.0.7 set to security = USER and acting as a WINS server and PDC.

After some experimentation here I've discovered that I cannot add the Linux box's root (you said your account had admin rights) user to the keychain. I mean I can ad it but it wont work, the linux box will challange it everytime I re-use it.
From this I'd guess you are using the root account to access the Samba boxes, not a good idea. Try creating a new account on the linux boxes and make it an ordinary member of USERS for example and try the keychain again. I created several users on my Linuxbox here and was able to add them all to the keychain with success bar the root account, it was the only one that didn't work.
