I think google are at it again. The GMail homepage says they are giving people more space (and implying infinte space). And when you're logged into your account, one has more than 1024 MB of space. I'm up to 1300ish MB, and it goes up slowly. Very strange and cool.

Ok, so it's established that we're getting 2GB (nice).

How many people are anywhere near their 1GB limit?

Also, if you are near 1GB how much of that isn't very compressible (e.g. it's mostly MP3's or zip files or whatever)?

Well they are the ones who announced free 1 GB webmail when the standard was 5 MB. It wouldn't put it past them.

I wouldn't be suprised if they went for unlimited storage. They wouldn't have to provide it, cause most people wouldn't use it and it'd be a hell of a marketing gimmick. You never know.

i think they are gettng storage up to 2gb but not infinity +1 thats just stupid, still a hell of a lot of space, and no emails on m PC happy days.

Yeah you can actually see the counter on the sign in page.

    EDIT: just saw this:

    G is for growth
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.

    Don't forget the gbrowser rumour.

There only real enemy is Microsoft. Remember Microsoft only entered the internet browser business because Netscape threatened to make the OS irrelevant. Netscape wanted everything to be done via the web (using Netscape Navigator of course). Customers having that kind of freedom of OS would seriously hurt Microsoft's busniess plan. So along came Internet Explorer.

Microsoft seem to be trying to be entering Google's game. It'll be interesting to see how it tuns out.

That may be true but Google is a more household name then Yahoo ever has been,

I was dargged to see the film Hitch during the week and almost everytime they showed a computer screen they showed either the Google homepage or search results page.

Also throughout the film there were lines such as "Did you Google his name?"
This film is not the only example, as far as brand recognoistion goes Google is sorted :)

Another thing to note is Google is the default search engine for Firefox, Camino and Safari...Yahoo doesn't get a mention without a toolbar being installed :)

I believe Google's only competition is MSN but nobody wants to use it as their search engine except for Microsoft. :D
