Windows slowing down. Help!

Sorry. Not nomally one to come running to a forum at the first sign of a problem but this is really pissing me off. Any help would be great.

Reloaded windows with the ghosting software from manufacturer a few weeks ago (no probs before that, just do it to clear any crap). Everything was working perfectly. loaded back all my software. Still fine. Then loaded up SP2 and around the same time happened to drop the laptop (not very hard at all, just a slip off the table onto the carpet).

No sign of overheating, all fans are working, no weird noises. Windows never encounters errors, loads up as fast as ever and plays music and videos no probs, burns cds no probs. CPU and Memory usage is normal. No adware or viruses.

The problem is only really when I'm loading programs or going to control panel etc.. Its especially bad when switching between internet explorer windows. Takes about a 30 secs.

Any ideas what the problems could be?

    Thanks :)

Emptied the cache. It wouldn't have been that full anyway after a fresh install.
But good news. My comp has speeded up all on its own. Its wrecking my head trying to think what was wrong with it

Bit of a long shot, but if you have more than one RAM stick, maybe one of them is loose? Worth checking everything is firmly seated, anyway.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Thanks. I'll remember that one as something to check in future. Would explain the slow down after dropping it, but why would it suddenly speed up again?

Its defo not the case with my laptop btw because it only has one ram chip.

You could check for spyware, though you did mention it's a fresh or reasonably fresh install, it's often the case with similar issues

After that you could probably check for bad disk sectors that may have been caused by the drop, perhaps the system started ingoring them hence the speedup. Meh! It's a theory :)

    See how you get on.
