Solid body guitar with reasonably high output pickups.

For heavy rock/metal I would say that for pure tone, the Les Paul wins... But for functionality and ease of play I say Ibanez... It all depends on the players needs... I play Ibanez because theyre easy to play and they have a decent trem system and I'm not a shredder...

    erm .....

    how about:

whatever guitar you try out that actually feels comfortable & has a sound you like. Last time I checked, there weren't any "heavy rock/metal" guitar brands out there.

Not exactly a jazz guitar is it? :D

(I do know what you mean)

Not that specific shape, NotMe... But I've seen blues players play Mockingbirds before, and I'd doubt there's any style of guitarist who'd be apprehensive playing one of these babies.

    Jesus, that's almost nice :p

    Almost!?

It's a ****ing word of art!

I must say the Hamer I saw Tipton playing was nice. I would have to say my favourite metal guitar is the Randy Rhodes signature model. Boy is it pretty.

But the best sound for me is still the Les Paul and most metal/ rock records rythm tracks will be recorded with one. Gotta love the les pauls for that....

Personally, I never understood the fascination with "metal" guitars that have more points than a hedgehog. Personally, I'd choose a guitar with good specs, fantastic tone and a great feel rather than spend hours deciding that a guitar looks more metal than another. But that's just me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

Most metal guitars are for the stage really. The records are usually recorded with a guitar like a Les Paul or Fender. Fenders have a lovely tone too....

They do. Just ask Iron Maiden :p

So, Iron Maiden use Fenders and Opeth use Prs's. Two metal bands with very non metal guitars (by the standard definition of "metal guitar"). What's the point? (Pardon the pun)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

PRS record very nicely too especially the customs....

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yeah yeah, you and your Prs

    :p

The McCarty has les hot pick ups. There more bluesy then the Custom Pickups. I'm thinking about getting some Hotter pick ups for it...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Dare I suggest you put some lumps of black plastic into your PRS? Would there be a witch hunt? :p

What are you thinking? Some Gibsons or Duncans?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

I'm not an EMG fan myself. I was thinking about Seymours but the good Doc suggested to me to keep it in the family and pick up some of the PRS pick ups to put in there. The Tremonti pick ups are the hottest ones they make. I must say he gets a sweet tone. He's not a bad guitarist either if you look pass the creed thing...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Aye. I was looking at the Tremonti SE when I was searching for a new guitar. But they disappeared just before I had the money due to the lawsuit.

Putting anything other than PRS in a PRS would be sacralige.

Nile mainman Karl Sanders also uses a Fender, but I think it's what you do with it that counts. I mean, is a guitar is "Metal" purely by virtue of it's spikes, rather than what it's used for? I don't particularly think so.

I'd say BC Rich are very metal by virtue of who played them, and what they did with them, not so much of some of the shapes. Pick up an album by Death, Morbid Angel, Emperor, Iced Earth, Immortal and so forth, you'll be hearing BC Rich guitars. So I don't think they're just for stage, as Dabhoys points out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

Thats what the good doc told me too :p

You can still get the Tremonti on ebay. I think they still have some in town too. There not bad guitars really. The quality is quite good from there. All though for that money you could get some Fender Japan stuff...

Thats the next things on my list. Going to be getting me some nice Fender Japan bass's for my recording and playing needs....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

I know there not only for stage. I agree with you. Alot of them time though its not the case.

BC Rich make some sweet guitars. Especially the older stuff.I wouldn't mind an old school Mockingbird. Hmm....

And lets not forget that this legend of a man played BC Rich:

Amen to derrick. Theres a reason why I've got a Derrick Smalls t shirt..

He's the luke warm water.... :p

I love that movie. It gets funnier everytime I watch it.

Didn't he start out building guitars for jazz players though...

We could be here all night debating what is and isn't a metal guitar. Like I said, a solid body guitar with a high output humbucker is all you need for metal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

Yeah true about that. Its all about the leather :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

No, he started out building guitars for Flamenco.

All goes to show that it's what you do with the guitar that counts. ;)

Leather cod pieces! Manowar all the way baby :p

In the case of BC Rich, smash it :)

What about a leather guitar?? With some studding and all on it!!!

    Thats the metal guitar!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    That would sound **** though!

Gimmie one of These Babies any day though. Hell, I'd gladly take one of those over a PRS any day.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I've actually been talking about doing that

Here's the most metal guitar ever. Now stop your belly aching:

Pfft, it'd be nice if it wasn't for those cloud inlays.

I haven't got a pic of my les paul but it looks like this one.

    http://www.ritchiesmusic.com/images/used/used20041111-007.jpg

I wouldn't trade it for anything it the world. I love the ebony fretboard.

Thats a nice BC Rich. Alot like the mockingbird. I like the through neck design...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Jaysis! Lose the EMGay and we're talking, but personally, I think that would be fairly useless... There's barely any higher fret access there at all.

Eh, they're all sharpened knvies. That guitar can't be played without slicing your hand open. The body was made by a knife maker.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

I haven't got EMG's. I've just the stock ones. I was recording today and hadn't any problems reaching the upper frets. But yes it could be easier to get up there...

Heres a question. Who made the first through neck designed guitars??? I'm curious.....

Aye, a good neck-through is always a plus in my opinion. I'm not too gone on the Les Paul, or PRS guitars, mainly because of the big fecking heel on the set-neck.

Still, that LP does look the business. ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

The heel on the Ibanez absolutely rocks.

As for neck through, I really couldn't tell you. I wouldn't be surprised if it was BC Rich. Fender pioneered the replacable neck and Gibson was always the set neck manufacturer.

Now, find me a guitar more metal than Nigal Tufnel's Ernie Ball!

Thats a guitar alrite. How much did that one on ebay for charity sell for again???

    I couldn't tell you.

Why settle for one guitar when you can have four guitars in one! Now with free hair spray.

Gah! That's madness! What is that, 4 humbuckers, or 8 single coils!?

As for Neck-through, BC Rich were definetly pioneers, as I think they were really the first manufacturer of neck-through guitars, but I don't think they were the inventors.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

You ever seen that dude play its almost like he's not even playing he plays so fast.

I think rickenbackers were making through neck pretty early on.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    8 Humbuckers.

Just think about how many guitar companies started selling neckthrough's in the 80's. Who started it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

I know Rickenbacker we're doing it with there bass's. We're they doing it with the guitars too....

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Aye, Ric guitars were neck through afaik. Were they the first? I dunno.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I just dug up this article about BC Rich, and it does mention something about the neck-through design, but not the origins of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

It might be worth noting that Rickenbacker were actually the first to make an electric guitar, just take a peek at this. Interesting read.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

I knew ric made the first electric guitar but I wonder if they made the first through neck. The good Dr. might know...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

It seems that the first Gibson "log" guitar was a neck through but the first production guitar to feature a neck through body design was the Bigsby Merle Travis, of which about a dozen were made in 1947.

Also, neck through guitars were made before bolt on and set neck guitars!
