excel 'converting metafile'

I'm trying to open an excel file created in windows xp (office 2002) on my mac with Office 2004 but I keep getting this progress bar saying 'converting metafile' over and over again, I've left it for 20 mins and it's still going! I can open it in another windows machine, so it's not corrupted, and it only contains about 25…

I can open it in another windows machine, so it's not corrupted, and it only contains about 25 lines with no graphs, charts or images...

I know it used to happen with powerpoint if there were graphs and so on, anyone got any ideas or solutions?

Would it be a euro symbol or some other symbol that the mac has trouble with? I've had word and excel documents with simple Greek symbols take ages to load, although nothin like 20 minutes, so maybe not...
