Isn't 1 Block the distance from one street junction to the next street junction.... Never knew there was actually a distance.

Eight blocks to one mile, IIRC.

    [edit]

Just googled - can be anything from 1/8 mile to 1/20 mile, depending on city.

According to my New Yorkian cousin that is true but only for streets and not avenues.

Same here, I can't imagine there being a standard block length, but then nothing the yanks do surprise me anymore.

"The distance from one crossing street to another." I think it varies depending on the city...

I just put miles in myself thinking there was a set distance to a block.Just checking out hotels in Anaheim in california, and hotel I was looking at said it was a block from Disneyland.

Read a review on hotel and some said you would not walk the distance from hotel to Disneyland. Now i wonder was it a lard arse writting that review, plenty of them over there :D .

That's what I'd thought aswell, but I remember hearing a different explanation of it before which wasn't related to the metric system at all.

A block is definatly the distance between streets.. fairly obvious as we use the same term here!! :D

Having spent time in the US and my wife being from there i know it depends on the city of course! A block in chicago for instance is similar to Dublin as downtown Chicago is a similar if not smaller size to Dublin city centre. Las Vegas which is more spread out and flat has larger blocks. If you look at most modern US cities, chicago especially they are in a grid system so literally you have hundreds of BLOCKS with roads in between them.

The irish version of a block is "just around the corner" - can be anything from 100m to 100km ;)
