India/Nepal/Tibet is a great expierience , but is a bit more hardcore so to speak, I met so many people who hated it.Its not easy , can be really over whelming but its real backpacking ! (or if its fun in the sun your after you could always stick to Goa on indias west coast)

You could inter-rail Europe ... not as cheap as Asia though.

If i had a month off id do the Trans-Mongolian (Moscow to Beijing via Mongolia)

Don't let the media scare you.

Do you know how little of Thailand is damaged?
My advice would be to stick to Thailand because there is so much more than Thailand to Phuket and Phi Phi. Phuket is very westernised anyway so skipping that wont ruin a backpacking journey.

yeah i'd suggest still going to thailand. If your dead against it how about Vietnam. Its a great place, loads to do, sun, cheap, etc. You'll love it. It is slightly dearer than thailand in my opinion but still really cheap. If it was me though i'd still go to thailand but id stay clear of any so called danger spots down south. Loads of fun to be had in central thailand and up north especially around Chang Mai. Id do anything to go back just for one night in the Riverside bar again! :)

Yeah there really is so much more to that area than Phuket and Phi Phi. I'm not even going to Phuket this time around but i'm looking to do a bit of volunteering on Phi Phi if possible.

You can go around Cambodia/Vietnam/Laos, they are all only a few hours drive from each other. In Thailand you can stay well away from the effected areas, what about Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Bangkok, Pattaya, Krabi, Chang Mai, Chang Rai and loads more!.

I'm flying to Thailand next Sunday, don't be put off by the media hype.
I have friends living there and it's fine.
Maybe try travelling up north so many beautiful places to see and dirt cheap.

Thailand needs people to go there more then ever.
