 I had this experience twice, and it was very scary.I was asleep in bed and was woken up by someone or something pulling my leg (NO PUN INTENDED)I could only see a big shadow as the door was slightly open and the light from the landing was shining in,I tried to scream but the words would not come out,my whole body was paralysed for what seemed like a life time,I was in a cold sweat, eventually the shadow was gone and I lay there very concious and very scared.I eventually got up and put the light on and kept it on for weeks. What was this????It happened once before only this apperition was standing over me.

That happened to me when I was younger kind of, I saw my dad come into my room but he had a weird look on his face, I got frightened put my hand out to touch him but it went right through his body, got freaked out for ages after that but presume now it was just my childish imagination.

dont think it was my imagination, as it happened twice and I am in my 40s,lots of other things have happened over the years where I lived as a child,we had this monk who appeared to my mother a few times, and at night the noise upstairs was so bad the neighbours next door were complaining, yet when you go up stairs it was silent. My mother described the apperition and went to the library and found out our block of houses was built on a 15th century monastery. She got the preist in to bless the house but it done no good. The monk always appeared in the same bedroom and it was always daytime she said his face was like paper and he had dark coloured robes on and had flowers in between his fingers and rosary beads wrapped around his hands. She was able to get a date of what century he lived in by the style off his hood.1yr later my brother died of leukemia but during his illness the monk appeared almost everyday. The room was always a cold room and even though it faced the sun it never got any light.I hated that room.Lots of things happened in that house it was a bad one, people who stayed overnight always said it was errie. It was sold last year, but if I could have I would have burned it down to the ground. There was an awful evil presence in it no matter what time off the day it was.

I think that feeling of being paralysed is sleep paralysis, or something. Think I've read it somewhere. But it says nothing about seeing something as well, or the feeling of something pulling your leg. That's just freaky

the body enters a state called atonia (i think) when you fall asleep that shuts off the muscular function to prevent from hurting yourself by involuntary movements or indeed pissing the bed. in turn when you as you wake this is usually reversed.

Sometimes when you dont awake fully the body is still imobilised but the mind has awoken.

the scary feeling is actually a more severe form of nightmare that is commonly called 'night terrors'.

also the feeling that someone was pulling your leg sound to me like 'restless leg syndrome'. try typing it into google.

its happened to me a few times. the paralysis once lasted about 2 minutes for me and really freaked me out!!

just came across these sites which might help your sleep:

The bit about a leg being pulled (sic) or trapped has been explained as having it pop out of the blanckets and getting cold and because your body can't move (see above) you feel trapped.

I seen it on the telly and it was like BBC2 Horizon or was it Equinox , maybe it was discovery so it must be true...

The two events could be unrelated. You may have simply suffered sleep paralysis(and the included terror etc), and your house is haunted by the monks that once lived on the land.

You said "evil" presence. Don't leap to conclusions. Might it be possible that that room is wierd and haunted, whch scares you so it seems evil, or do you literally feel like there is something genuinely bad to the core?

Just out of curiosity valerie, were you by any chance a caesarian section at birth?

I was born by caesarian section, and as a child I had a recurring nightmare that I would be dragged out of whatever room I was in by a shadow. Having talked about it with my parents, I'm pretty sure it was some kind of latent memory of my birth. Talking about it with my friends these days, even they are freaked out by the idea. That particular dream seems to have stopped these days, but I never rule out having another one.

It's sound really like sleep paralysis. It's been discussed here a few times before and it's worth reading these threads here , here , and here and checking out some of the links in them. Whatever views you want to take on what is behind it, the more you know about it the better you'll feel if it happens again.

    ZILLAH
to answer your question did I actually beleive the house was evil? Yes I did and still do,I would have loved for all you people with sound recorders etc. to stay a few nights,a lot of people who knew nothing about the goings on day and night reported hearing objects move and been very cold all night.I am not telling lies.Lots of unexplained happenings went on,and I was not the only one to feel a presence. There was something bad in it.May I ask you a question? What does it mean when a xmas tree shakes so violenty, like its been shook in anger? My husband and I were in the sittingroom and the dogs were on the couch with me,they ran as soon as it happened and my husband could not believe what was happening before his eyes as he is a non believer in all things paranormal. The same night the music centre in the box room was thrown on the floor speakers and all,no one slept in there it was just a place for my son to play his music. This is my house, not the one I was describing earlier. Can a spirit or whatever follow you?Would be delighted to hear from you as I NEED a rational explaination.
    Thanks.

Damn me I'm usually so good at keeping up with threads. I only saw your message now Valerie, I'm very sorry it took so long.

But reading your post I'm afraid I'll probably disappoint. I can't offer a scientific answer (kinda off topic: I don't like the phrase "irrational" as it implies that a paranormal solution can never be appropriate...).

I have few "beliefs" when it comes to the paranormal, I will trust what I can perceive and deduce, nothing more. I'm not a spiritual person, I'm a scientiffic one, but I do know a bit about spirituality.

So with that cumbersome caveat out of the way I'll say this; the spiritually inclined would most likely see the shaking of the christmas tree as an attempt at getting attention. The tree didn't fly at anyone or somesuch, so its unlikely to be violent, it's a way of shouting "I'm here notice me blah blah blah over here!!" Don't think of these experiences as a bunch of wierd stuff that happened, try to piece together a hypothesis, be it scientific or spiritual.

So lets go about this logically shall we?

Think back, what's the first memory you have of anything seemingly inexplicable happening in the house?

    In a more general sense:

    Who does it involve?

    Where does it involve?

    How do people feel?

    How do people react?

Do different people's accounts match up?

How many people has it involved?

    What exactly have people experienced?

The more detail you can give the better chance I have of coming up with a theory, although by no means do I promise an answer :)

I had this same thing, however the shadow used to sit at the bottom of my bed, and i could feel the weight of it on my bed... i tried to scream, but i was sooo scared nothing would come out! :\

I've only ever expierienced something simular once (see thread mentioned above), but basicly, i was paralysed, and unable to talk or shout, untill i eventually managed to let out a grunt and i fairly violently "shook" my self free (i dont know how else to describe it) and i leaped up from my bed and turned my lamp on. I had a very loud buzzing in my ear also, as though a bee had flown into it (which is a very common expierience im told), and as all this was happening, i felt very threatend, vunrable, and frightend. I was, at the time, under the impression that someone or something was doing this to me, which is why, afterwards, i could feel my heart thumping in my chest, and energy from adrennalin.

But the cause is basicly a trick of the mind, it's a combanation of the process your body physically(paralyisis ..sp??) and mentally (dream state), which i think is scientificly explained, and generally accepted for why some people see shadows, figures, faces, hear voices etc. in this state. It's perfectly normal, and nothing to worry about, and is just a glitch in the process of falling asleep.

As for the hauntings, i dont think any explenation can be given for a tree violently shaking infront of your eyes (unless you believe in spirits). Maybe your cat was on the other side climbing it, chasing/attacking a decoration/string? :)

As for the music center falling, it could be anything really. The player could have been pushed/pulled slightly too far inadvertantly when changing CD without even noticing, and gravity slowly did the rest (as things don't neceraly collapse immediatly). I imagine the wires would hve pulled the speakers down with it.

I'm not saying you're wrong though, i too am intrigued by this, and am only offering you possiblitys...but ultimatly, i do believe in "spirits" or certain energys. But i don't like them. I think certain people happen to attract it for reasons unknown as of yet. Gladly, i have had very few eeary expieriences. And that's the way i'd like to keep it.

This is probably the last forum I'd ever consider posting in, but I regularly get the sensation of being "hit" when I'm tired or drifting off to sleep. The best way I can describe it is as being a psychosomatic shock that instantly gets the adrenalin going - It's like being hit in the back or face (it varies) with all the sensation but none of the pain... The best theory I can come up with is that it's some sort of recurring muscle memory from some previous physical trauma. Anyone know what I'm on about?

Wow..After watching white noise, I just remembered this event as its the weirdest thing I've expierenced. So i google searched leg Pulled from bed and found this.

This has happened to me twice as well. The first time I was 5 or 6. I was young and dismissed a nightmare which is normal for kids.

The second time was not too long ago. It was within a 1-2(max) years ago. My logic for this event was this: On this night I had taken a natural substance called mellotonin. It aids in sleeping and is an herb. This same night I was sick of some sort so I ended up taking a nighttime flu which creates drowsiness by an antihistamine chemical like Doxylamine succinate or Diphenhydramine HCl. When this happened I was 15 or 16 (im almost 17 now).

Ok I'll try my best to explain. I'm sleeping. I'm awaken by the feeling of something grabbing my leg and jerking it HARD downwards off the bed about a half a foot or so. My reaction is to retract my legs quickly and try and speak. The most recent occurrence I tried to scream "Heeelpp! Heelp!" but nothing came out, just a faint whisper. It sucked. I don't fully remember if i turned my tv on, or if i just straight ran outta my room. I did not sleep in my room that night but rather on the couch in the living room, waking up each second one of my 4 cats made a noise, I was basically paranoid.

So told my folks about this as its not normal to experience this at this age. Their conclusion having a good understanding of medicine was : The melatonin makes you heart beat slow down and become tired while the flu medicine made the heartbeat speed up n make you tired. They said the mix of these two added to the nightmare and mental disorientation.

As I recall my friend of 5+ years also had this jerking off the bed feeling. we related storys. He even check to see if one of his family had done it. No one had gone in his room.

I'm hoping to search and find out more about this, but I wanted to let the original poster is not alone.

I think I can relate you on that. Usually I have two ways of falling asleep. One being so tired I just flop into bed and go into almost an immediate sleep. And the other going to bed while not tired. This usually involves thinking about stuff before sleeping. Then the thinking about stuff moves to dreaming about stuff and then to proper sleep.

The times I have experienced the "shock" was during the thinking/dreaming phase before proper sleep. Usually in the dream I'm just about to fall or trip over something then "bang" instance adrenlaline rush in preparation for the sensation of falling over except I wake up in a cold sweat and realise that was just a dream.

Hasn't happened to me for a while which I put down to a better diet. I like to drink tonnes of water to sort out the toxins before going to bed.

wow!! something similar happened to me when i was younger. i was in my bed sleeping when i was awoke by someone blindfolding me with their hands i tried to pull the hands away but they were too strong and were holding me too tight. it was very scary and very "real" yet when i tried to scream i was not able to get the scream out. when eventually i did scream my parents came rushing in to see what was going on. of course they though i was just having a nightmare but i know that i was not. there was definitaly something there. for the next few weeks i slept in my sisters bed with her in her room. i did eventually return to my own room (as she was getting sick of me) but had to keep the lights on. the worst thing about this is when i told people they thought i was "bonkers". so i totally know what your talking about. to this day even with the reassuring of sleep parlysis by people im certain that there was something in my room that night!!

    Sounds like a hypnic jerk
A hypnic or hypnogogic jerk is an involuntary muscle twitch (more generally known as myoclonus or a myclonic twitch) which often occurs during the transition from wakefulness to sleep (see hypnogogia). It is often described as an electric shock or falling sensation, and can cause movement of the body in bed. Hypnic jerks are completely normal, and are experienced by most people, especially when over-tired or sleeping uncomfortably.

yes, i know exactaly what your both on about here but this is completely different. i've expereinced hypnic jerk a few times but this was acutally someone with their hands over my eyes, blindfolding me and i was actually awoken by it not on the verge of going to sleep

I have experienced these night terrors many times. It often feels as if something is in the room with me. I cannot move, talk, scream. After trying very very hard to move about the paralysis seems to wear off after perhaps 10/15 seconds (thats a guess). It is a freaky feeling, but often seems to happen when I am very very tired and go into a really deep sleep. As frightening as it is, sometimes the paralysis feeling is pleasant if you are in a deep deep semi-sleep phase. I've tried to describe this to people before but if they haven't experienced it then it seems odd.

Apparently the feeling of someone being in the room with you is related to stress. This was referred to in bygone times as "monkey on the back".

An interesting experience to have nonetheless.

google for "sleep paralysis" theres loads o stuff on this, ive been experiencing this in phases since i was a kid,it usually starts off as a pleasant floaty feeling but more often than not turns into the night terrors described above.
ive learned to live with it but its still quite scary.
Its actually happened to me twice last week - the first time in months actually.
im not sure what the scientific explanation is but ive always thought that its a very vivid dream triggered by a momentary slip into conciousness.

I had a half case of sleep paralysis last night..freaky.
I've had it before only last time it was much more intense and paralysing. Last night was different, I remember waking up and my entire body was shaking (or felt that way) like I was in an earthquake and then that whacky noise effect kicked in. Its kind of hard to describe, like a very loud reverb effect .It was painful to try and move but at least I managed to move this time..took me ages to come around though. Having had it before I was consciously aware what was happening, but initially thought "ahhh...earthquake". Then the reverb noise sounded like distorted footsteps walking down a long empty corridoor (like a prison) and iron doors being closed every couple of steps...but yet I knew it was just the effects of what was happening.

I saw through the corner of my eye what i thought was a person's figure, i turned my head and saw this completely black figure leaning over me. The moon was shining into my room as the curtains were open and it lit the whole room with its glow but this figure was completely black and it didn't have a face or anything. I was so scared, i couldn't speak and all i could do was close my eyes and go back to sleep. Next morning i asked my dad was he in my room and he said he wasn't, weird eh?

Sleep paralysis can cause, among others, the following things.

    - Paralysis.

    - A sense of being watched.

    - A sense of an overwhelming presence.

    - Auditory and visual hallucinations.

    - A pressure on the chest.

If you have experienced any of these while in bed, its most likely sleep paralysis. Its well documented and harmless, while also being remarkably common. I myself have had it twice in the last year, one of which had some auditory hallucinations.
