is it just me or does anyone else notice that font smoothing isn't as efficient in Linux as in Windows, i'm not awfully experienced in Linux so i could be missing something! I have enabled anti alising in the config of the various distros i have but when viewed side by side the windows screen always seems that little bit better.

Not in my experience. I'm very happy with the font rendering in GNOME.
