I am going on Wednesday. I've got a good lot of info at this stage and talked to some people who have been and will be with people who know it, but still, anything extra you can add is welcome.

Although it can be a lot of fun, there is a lot of crime there. A lot! So just be careful.

Keep on the main strip, many roads just off the main area have little or no lighting.

Buy plenty of beads and enjoy

Sorry to resurrect old threads, but a good way to save server space :D

I'm going to be in New Orleans for a week in June. I've never been, and I'm going on my own (it's part of a trip to Memphis and New York).

I'm looking for any advice at all.. where to go, what to do, places to stay etc..

Anything you could tell me would be well appreciated.. :)

    Kev.

    Hi Kev,

    You'll have a great time in N'Awlins, as they say over there. It's about 6 years since I was there so here's just a general impression;

Loved it, the place has a vibe like no other, and is so different from anywhere else in the States. It has a european feel, all that French influence .. just walk around a bit, you can't help but get caught up in all that jazz and blues, there are great bands playing in bars and on street corners.

We stayed in some hostel, clean and safe, can't quite remember the details.
We took a trip on the Bayou to see the alligators, it was nice to get out a bit.
We also took a trip to an old Plantation house, that was interesting.
From the town we went on a steamship down the Mississippi, great cocktails for cheap.

Tour the old graveyards, and voodoo shops ... weird but wonderful and ride the tram, the oldest tram in the world.

Finally, there was a cool Irish bar (I know I know) ... Pat's I think, check this out as there was a blind guy who played a tray, yes a tray, he was amazing!

All in all, not one thing alone stands out for me in N'Awlins but there's something so fascinating, and a v. laid back bluesy atmosphere. I can see how Anne Rice got to writing vampire stories there.

    Enjoy!

One of my favourite cities in the world, and most definitely the best in the US.

So it's an okay city to be exploring on your own do you think?
I've been told to hostel it as opposed to staying in a hotel.. Makes sense I suppose, cheaper and easier to meet people...

Golfgirl, I've just put all those things you mentioned down on my list of things to do when I get there :)
