Yeah I lived there for 5 months. La Rambla is the main shopping area. You'll get a lot of good stuff there. I worked in an Irish bar there called Flahertys if you see it. You'll get a nice view of the city on Mount Tibidabo. There's an excellent amusement park up there too. Sagrada la Familia is the best building if you're into that.

TIP: Always travel by Metro. Taxis and buses are ridiculously overpriced and you can get weekly tickets etc. for the metro.

Can't remember the name of any hotels. Sorry.

I lived there for 3 months a couple of years ago....when you are over there I recomend you buy a magazine called "La Guia del Ocio", it is just a magazine with the list of the best restaurants/night clubs/pubs/museums and everything else in Barcelona. It is the equivalent of "In Dublin" in Dublin.

was there last October mad city

Make sure you visit Camp Nou and get to see Barca play
The cathedral is a bit of a let down like a building site
Also go to visit Gaudis House interesting the park is not that great

When you arrive there get the bus and it drops you into the main square where you can change to anywhere. Stayed somewhere off the square cannot remember but close to everything. Go into the tourist office in the square and they do trips. Did one to Montserrat which is some holy shrine up the top of the mountain good views. Also do the bus tour as you can hop on and off and your ticket is valid for 2 days. Think there are 2 roots blue and green.

For eats go to Les Quinze Nits just off the Ramblas but be prepared to queue
They have another place just off the main square which I thought was nicer, cannot remember the name

Just stumbled across pubs and just went with the flow

Anywho check out http://travel.roughguides.com/roughguides.html for places to stay. Try get somewhere near the square or off Las Ramblas. Be warned it does get noisy

    Good look and enjoy

I'd recommend what the others have above. Was there last October, liked it a lot.

Regarding getting around - if you are going to be doing a number of days sightseeing in the city, get a daily ticket for the tourist bus. There's 2 or 3 routes which are circuits of different parts and the routes overlap - you can hop on and off at will and the buses are very frequent. It was a great service for us.

I honestly can't remember how much the tickets were, but I remember they were well worth getting for randomly hopping around the city. We stayed here:

I'm going there in two weeks time and just used Google to find a hotel. Search "Barcelona hotel" and literally dozens of sites will pop up. After that it's just a case of finding one that your budget will cover. I will say though that you should get your skates on. We booked a couple of weeks ago and a lot of our original hotel choices were booked out.

I was there about 10 years ago and the one place I always remember is the Cafe Zurich at the very top of the Ramblas. I believe it's still there and it was a great place to sit outside with a drink and watch the world happen around you. I'd also endorse the earlier suggestions to go up Tibidabo, there's a great view from there, and to visit the Nou Camp, even if there isn't a match on you can do a tour of the stadium. I have my match ticket so I'm looking forward to it even more :D
