Unneccessary Discrimination

I was in HMV in the Square in Tallaght, and I seen this mother (youngish about 21, id say) and child infront of me, the child had a couple of dvd box sets in her hand about 2. When all of a sudden this foreign wanker who was apparantly security, came up behind me and asked the women and the child to leave the store.

Talk about plain out discrimination, this a$$hole had crap english. The mother looked decent enough, not talking your tallaght skanger here.

See discrimination is practised by everyone to some extent. Personally, I agree with you, but to be fair, we don't know any background. Maybe she was barred?
Maybe the guy got a call from the camera room?

The asshole with crap english is more likely than not the only one they could get to do such a crap job for such a crappy wage.

Yeah maybe, I know I probably didn't see it all, but of what I did see, it just looked very discriminating.

Yeah obviously, in no way was I suggesting this. When asked to leave the girl was intentionly shocked and didn't give abuse. If she was from tallaght, I dont think she was a skanger.

What does the fact that he is foreign, or that his english is bad have to do with anything? Me senses a touch of hypocrisy in the air..

Once I asked for a kids meal (and I'm 20) in a resteraunt. I wasn't that hungry and yes, it was a bit cheaper. They said I wasn't allowed to have a kids meal because I wasn't a child. This is age discrimination.

Maybe the woman was a celeb and it's part of some new Irish take on of Punked?

I think you're joking.. but if you're not then you're wrong. It's no more age discrimination than child fare on a bus.

An example of what IS age discrimination however is car insurance.. It's also extremely sexist. Reverse the situation; say it was statistically more likely that the older you are, the more you crash. Also that women and black people crash more and thus were charged more. Would society stand for it? I think not..

Sorry, OT. Might start another thread on this one

if she was actually shoplifting they would have followed her and waited for her to leave the shop without paying and then arrested her.

i saw this happen once in galway. security from a shop followed a woman into another shop where they detained and searched her. she had stuff from about 4 different shops.

You know you raised two good points in two good posts. First of all, well done in picking up on the distinct sense of hypocrisy that permeates the starting post...

Did it really matter that the security guard was foreign? Was it important to the story? No, then why state it? That's unnecessary discrimination in itself...

I wasn't joking, but I never thought of the whole bus situation  It seems slightly different that I can't have something on a menu because of my age though. What if I ordered it by phone and they had it prepared for me to pick up and refused to give it to me because I wasn't a kid? hehe. Sorry to go off the first post, I'm just going by the topic title, oops :o

Oh yeah, meant to mention this in my reply too...

[Boast] I worked in McDonalds once! [/Boast] ...Anyway, there's no policy against giving you a Happy Meal - that's just someone trying to make their minimum wage day interesting really.

Of course it's not the same as a childs bus fare as it isn't discounted in anyway, it's actually just a normal meal (Hamburger meal, small chips and small coke is 2.50 whilst a Happy Meal is €3?) that is *marketed* towards children. McDonalds aren't losing money by selling an adult a happy meal - otherwise they certainly wouldn't be selling them to children!

As much as i hate store security and bouncers in general it is very likely that she/the kid was caught on the day or previously doing bold things that hurt the profits of large multinational corporations bla bla bla ...

I used to do security myself (industrial sites mostly, but had to cover a few sucky shifts in poxy retail stores too) - she probably was caught robbing from the place before. Shops/security staff (they usually don't work for the shop in question themselves) are very careful about possibly barring/kicking someone out/accusing people of shoplifting in the wrong, the shop could be left open to law suits because of it.

Yes; you can't have thousand pound astronauts; it causes smaller spacecraft to fall apart.

Realistically, tho, no, of course not.

There's no obvious grounds for discrimination in the description of the incident, tho.
