19" and 17" TFT monitor resolutions

Im in the market for a TFT but am slightly put off by 19" monitors only being able to do a resolution of 1280 x 1024. This seems low for such a large viewable screen. I currently have a 21" crt which has a similar viewable size and run it at 1600 x 1200. Is there a reason for 19" monitors having the same resolution as…

I'm also going to buy one shortly, so I'll stick in some questions I have about them too!

How do people find them for gaming ?
Is there a minimun response time to go for ?
Or a minimum brightness ?
Or a minimum Contrast Ratio ?
