Telecom Italia promises 90% broadband coverage in 2005

The president of Telecom Italia, Marco Tronchetti Provera, has announced that by the end of the year the company wants to arrive to a broadband coverage of 90% of the population. Tronchetti Provera explained “over a two and half year period we have doubled the broadband offer for our clients, reducing the price by nearly 50% at the same time. Also from 1998 the prices of Italian telephony services have been reduced by around 8% compared to an increase of the general price index of 16%”. For the future the president of Telecom Italia forecasts that competition will be mostly on a European level. Tronchetti Provera also pointed out that privatization has been beneficial for the telecommunication sector because it has re-introduced competition in a very important industry as well as giving an important boost for the competitiveness of the entire Italian economy and improving the quality of services offered to citizens. “The first, most evident proof of competition is that which has developed between fixed and mobile telephony. For the past seven years – points out Tronchetti Provera – the “voice” component in the fixed telephony sector is not growing any more, in fact it has a tendency to decrease, while “voice” traffic on the mobile network has grown at the rate of 25% a year".

Sounds like the sort of self-serving nonsense that Eircom comes out with.

There are a few mountainous regions in Italy, (or should I say that the Po valley doesn't have mountains) and lots of little villages. Getting to the last 10% of the population is nowhere near as easy as it would be here. Lots of providers have been advertising ADSL for ages.

They seem to be phasing out pay as you go ADSL over there now, like dial up in that you pay by the minute !
