NAS Box using Linux

    Hey all,

looking for some advise. I am looking to build a NAS (Network attached storage) box and use linux as the OS.

I have some large disks that will comprise the NAS array and also have a 256mb SD card that I want to put the operating system on (using and SD->IDE) convertor.

The problem is that I cant find a small linux distro that will fit on the 256mb card and that has all of the bits and bobs included. I dont need X, but do need full networking, Samba, NFS etc...

Has anyone done anything similar or know of any distro's that might be suitable?

I have looked at a few CD based distros that would do the job, but naturally, a CD wont fit on my 256mb SD card!

    Thoughts?
    Ta,
    Jab

you could try using gentoo. i don't know the size of a X-less install but you can pretty much only include the stuff you want and leave out the rest...
    ask around at http://forums.gentoo.org

theres other linuxes as well, such as damn small linux, that are less than 256mb (DSL includes X I think). also some of the USB based linuxes might be useful. you could always roll your own using Knoppix or LinuxFromScratch.

    Thanks for the info.

Most of the USB based distro's that I have looked at (that include instructions on how to run from a H/D) all decompress to much larger sizes. For example, I looked at DSL, but its nice small 50mb footprint requires 200mb if you want to install it on a H/D! Assuming that you need at least 128mb for a swap disk, this makes it too big for my needs.

I will take a look at LinuxFromScratch tho....sounds interesting...

    Thanks,
    Jab

I set up a wee router on a discarded PC for a friend. I installed a minimal Debian distro, just enough to do the routing, and it only took up 184M of a 512M hard disk. I don't know how much more Samba would have added.

Do you really need a swap partition? I certainly wouldn't put one on an SD card anyway.

zipslack should work (slackware.com), with room to spare for extras.

Havn't used it in 5 yrs (486, 8 MB, 150 MB HDD) though, so can't compare it to other versions.

The distribution name eludes me but I'm fairly certain there is (or was) a distribution specifically designed to run off a flash memory card.

    Edit: Pebble (Debian based)
