scan disk , reports bad sectors before it gives the "unexpected error" error .its about 8 months old

Get your XP Cdrom and boot into the recovery console.....

    Try run at the prompt:

    chkdsk c: /p /r

This /p will perform an exhaustive check of your drive and fixes errors.
This /r will locate bad sectors and try recovering/remapping information from them.

did this, it finishes but there are still bad sectors on the drive and i am unable to delete certain files. It also crashes sometimes when i try to write data to a certain part of the disk. I dont really want to format the drive as there is a lot on it.

does anyone know what policys harddrive manufacturers have about bad sectors? had a look around the WD site and it doesnt say much about it

formatting won't help. You have to rescue as much data off it as you can, and then get yourself your free replacement off whoever you bought the drive from. Its unfortunate that it happened, but all that can be done is replace it, and you are well within your years warrenty.

If the place you bought it off refuses to exchange it, you can still get a replacement direct from WD themselves, but thats more hassle.

i think ill just to straight to WD as they will send out the replacement drive first so i can copy all the files over
