Did anyone watch this on TV? I found Dave Fanning's voiceover commentary to be very distracting. What did everyone else think?

The commentary was absolutely awful. They also played noises of a crowd cheering while showing the crowd who of course weren't cheering at all. Also, it was obvious it wasn't the crowd cheering as it sounded so edited. You'd think it'd be easy to show a few fireworks on TV but they managed to ruin it.

Too many shots of the crowd and not enough of the fireworks.
Also, the people manning the cameras were pretty crap... screen was wobbling about and moving back and forth too much.

T'was a much better job last year... less waffling and better view on tv.
I had a great view of it from a hospital window in Blackrock last year too :D

Fireworks don't really lend themselves to TV. A waste of 1/2 hours broadcast time and effort really.

The commentary was annoying but fireworks just don't work on telly, you don't get the full effect

They still look good though, I like watching them when not able to get into town anyway...
It achieves a decent audience too I believe. Yes the commentary was appalling, as was the sound mixing. The coverage was better last year and in some previous years as Kêrmêttê said...

I thought the shot of the street lamp looked exceptionally well throughout - looked great against the night sky, beautifully composed the shot and put the fireworks into context.
The shaky cameras were unacceptable, but this was nothing compared to the coverage of the parade on Thursday. Two of the cameras I believe were placed on cherrypickers and the shaking was just appalling - really really bad on mid shots & close-ups, the worse I've seen. And there were perfectly solid 4 & 5 storey buildings right behind them that RTÉ could have negociated with for use...

And that main wide shot of O'Connell St with the Spire in the centre, the shot that was probably sold around the world, that was used in bulletins thorought the day, that was used in edited highlights - wasn't even level! - the Spire leaning to one side!
    What a joke.

i was praying for him to shut the fu<k up. he ruined it. as i wasn't in Dublin to see them, im glad they were shown on tv, but i don't need running commentary on fireworks, especially not from motormouth fanning. i also did not appreciate the crowd shots every 20 seconds, i don't care if kids are smiling in awe, i wanted to see some impressive pyrotechnics! also the way they went back to kathryn thomas during them didnt impress me either. rte better learn from their mistakes!
