just thought id let every1 in on the new eye cinema in wellpark which opened on friday. went to see a movie there last night. the movie wasnt great but as for the place itself it was excellent. it has to be the best cinema outside Dublin. it is cheaper than the omniplex the seats are very comfortable and the surroung sound was ear blowing.. id definitly reccomend any 1 to check it out.. there's even a ben and jerry's outlet in it..hmmm

I'm not sure about the cheaper bit - it's a euro more I think (9 as opposed to 8 or 8.50 in the Omniplex).

Also, a medium popcorn and drink is 6.80 as opposed to 6.10 in the Omniplex.

Having said all that, the place looks fabulous darling, the view over the bay is lovely and the branding is brilliant. I'm looking forward to trying the luxury screen "Magnificent 7".

i only paid 6 euro for my ticket and the kids were only a fiver.. i thought that was great for a sat night.. as for the price of food it is a bit pricey but sure every1 sneaks food in these days..... dont they?

The student prices look reasonable, €5 Mon-Thurs, €6 Fri-Sun, no apparent time limits.

I shall take a gawk in this new cinema one day when I've a day off work...

It looks very good from the website. I especially like the fact that they've an "Arthouse" section, seeing as there's many films that the Omniplex just don't show.

I'll definetly have to take a look out there.

yeah id definitly reccomend the place to any cinema lover... its brilliant that galway now has a dedicated arthouse cinema screen, this can only enhance galways reputaion as a cultural mecca

House of Flying Daggars would be cool on the big screen, might make a trip during the week.

Oranmore Omniplex opening April 1 (not a joke). They have decent seats because it was originally fitted out to another owner's specifications.

Great that Eye is open ... the ongoing feud between Ward Anderson (Omniplex) and Warner and Columbia which prevented them showing certain movies in Galway is now over pretty much. The only reason these films weren't shown here is because there was no competition ... now there is at last.

I was in the Eye Cinema today to watch a House of Flying Daggers in the Luxury Theatre(I paid 7 Euros!). It was like I died and went up to Heaven! Everything about this cinema is perfect. The seats were the most comfiest seats I've sat on in a cinema, the food looked superb, even the toilets were cool and they have lots and lots of plasma screens! It's also cheaper than Omniplex! Well done Eye, you've earned yet another lifetime customer(or however long more I stay in Galway :D)!

Took a walk around the cinema myself the other day and it's lovely. It has a little bottle-bar at the end, I think it's called the arthouse bar or something, so maybe it is more to do with the arthouse screen than regular cinema-goers. Seats are a bit weird around the lobby area but are very modern. Didn't go to see a film so I can't comment on the theatre part. There's escalators up to the screens(I don't think there's much on the ground floor, but maybe I've missed something). As for price, I didn't take much notice as I was just going in for a loook and didn't buy anything. It also has a lovely big plasma screen beside where you buy your tickets. You could nearly watch a film there if there was sound and it'd be cool.

The only problem with the Eye cinema is that before each film you are subjected to five minutes of that twat Hector. Everyother cinema in the country can tell you to turn off your phone and where the exits are in ten seconds without resorting to torturing the audiance.

I think I'll still keep going to the Omniplex, as its easier to go from film to film, and because its located right across from where my gf works.

100% percent agree with you on the Hector factor - a right turn off before the film, also foreigners stuggle with his goddamnawful accent. He will soon become consigned to that celebrity scrapheap alongside Carrie Crowley, BIBI Baskin, Pat Ingoldsby, and other random 'great white hopes' of RTE yesteryear - at leats I hope so!
Your dead right about the cinemas skippin thing...the eye isn't nearly as skipping friendly as the Omniplex is.

The Onmiplex in Oranmore, is well cool. The seats are like very comfortable car seats, with headrests and all. Plus it's is literally five minutes walking distance from my abode so that's handy.

    Two bad things though:
    1. The smell is terrible, like new car smell amplified ten million fold, nauseating!

    2. Always deserted, I went to see the Amityville Horror last week and there was about twenty people in a screen catering for three hundred.

Then again that might be a good thing... Ie; never the possibility of it booking out, also no smelly moody fourteen year olds shouting random crap at the screen, "Oi, Cishi, where's my fags.... Whaaa?".

All in all, the O-Side cinema gets thumbs up, not as cool as the EYE but still very very very very very good! :D

Not really, seeing as we (I'm friends with this red haired guy) went to see Ring 2 there also, which was even worse - we were the only people in a screen catering for a few hundred on a FRIDAY night!

Same thing with Amityville Horror, and as my other friends say - same for them in Sahara, only people there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,711 ✭✭✭Redhairedguy

I reckon it will pick up after a while... but still, it is quite dire to be in a cinema screen with only three other people and yourself.

BTW, Drake, do you really think the Amityville Horror sucked? I thought it was a fairly good aul horror romp... weird at parts by still I thought it was decent... :)

Unless you're talking about the 1974 version, and that's a whole different ball game... Strobe lighting for the gateway to hell.... ohhhhh..... so realistic...... *GASP*

P.S Mobile.... Quote for you... "3.15, time for a ....." Finish the setence!

Eye cinema, lovely, shiney not too much of a que to be seen anywhere, nice size cinema very comfy seats,MONG on the screen telling people how to do this and that, felt like sticking my phone in his god awful GOB!
Ok on TG4 slightly funny put-up-able etc but does this guy have to be everywhere.
On the plus side hopefully he will burn himself out very soon as familiarity breeds contempt.
I have a fear that I will be using a public toilet in an airport eg and he will be on a screen telling me that i did not wipe my ass properly!
    scary or what????
thank god somebody else out there feels that he is unecessary.

Demeant0r, how did you get in to see House of flying daggers for a mere €7? I had to pay €12! I nearly had a stroke.

Yes, the food is heinously exensive too, but it wasn't all bad. Me and a friend were bitching at each other so much whole buying popcorn that we got asked were we a couple. Interesting...

I completely agree with the Hector comments. Why on earth do they need a whole 2 mins. or so to tell you to abstain from smoking, turn off phones and not chew gum? (Oh, and to that list of RTE's great white hopes may I add Kathryn Thomas and Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh?)

But I think the design of the cinema is great, especially the view over Lough Atalia and the seats in the lobby area. It kind of has a whole airport feel to it.

Did anyone else hear of the plans to install a bar in the Eye? I think someone has to object to this. You would just end up with a situation where parents would dump their kids in a film and then sit at the bar for 3 hours. I mean, there's the Huntsman across the road and the new hotel (The G) next door, so there will be enough alcohol in the vicinity. Anyone have any idea how one can object to a liquor licence application?

With regards to that rumour... It's true.... I was told by one of the managers when I wandered over for a look when it first opened. The bar area is already built... it's now just a matter of stocking it. I suppose it's kinda a bad thing though, ie; drunk people screaming and puking everywhere, while you sitting with your children, trying to watch the newest Pixar movie out. :p

I don't know, maybe it was student discount or something, I asked the one working if it was in screen 7 and she said yeah, and then I handed over the 7 euros happily. :)

Nicest cinema I've ever been in! It was very quiet on Saturday night, though. Why????

because they had a drought of a couple of weeks without new films, while omni had Downfall, Garden State, The Assassination of Richard Nixon. I think Eye got Man of teh House. :D. the films they call 'Arthouse' are the ones omni are already showing, and Eye wont put on more that one showing per week.

also: red walls in every screen (!?)

omni is a better run cinema out and out.

I went there last night. It's lovely. It's about twice the walk to get there than to the Omniplex, but worth it all. The luxury screen is sodding great. More legroom than I know what to do with. Comfy leather seats. Yum.

off to see HG2TG pretty soon, €12 for the lux screen! well it had better be worth it! it would be ever so cool if (like the UGC in Dublin) they would offer a membership option and id never leave!

yup theres another thing I was hoping for with two new cinemas....

A years unlimited access ticket. I think its teh UCI that do them, a friend of mine has one in dublin.

I think the Eye is a grand cinema and is better than Omni Headford because of decent seating (no problems with tall feckers in front of ya) but its on a par with the omni in oranmore.

Tis a shame that it offers nothing new (sure there is a lean towards "arthouse" type stuff - but im only in the mood for that sometimes) (the ben & jerrys is nice I suppose!)

I say book ahead allocated seating and yearly tickets EYE!!!! Get the arses in gear!!!!! Do they want to sell tickets or what?!!!!

On behalf of everyone at the EYE Cinema I wish to thank you for your interest in our new cinema, your valuable comments and lively debate.

What I would like to do is give you our comments on your comments.
    -Uniforms – gone changed
-Film Offer – we wish to give you the maximum choice of films every week and across a range of times – from pre-noon and late night shows. We are looking at building into our film schedules many of the suggestions you have made through the Art House Forum on the eyecinema website.
-Pricing – This is always a sensitive issue - so here goes
Our early bird ticket at €4.50 is the lowest in Galway,
Our family ticket – 2 adults and 2 children is competitively priced.
We think, and a lot of people agree with us, the best is worth paying that little bit extra for - which is why our luxury screen is sold out for most evening performances
-Concessions - You will be pleased to learn we have introduced better value concession products with a bigger range and competitively priced selection of combos

So for the best choice of films in Galway, the best seats in Galway, the best screens in Galway and the best sound in Galway - it has to be the EYE Cinema.

Please keep in touch with us – we want to know what you think and how we can improve your cinema.

damn fine cinema, especially the magnificent 7 screen.
it's so refreshing to come out of a 2 hour+ film and not have to rub life back into your numb ass. :)

Cool, it's a pretty class cinema, any complaints/ suggestions i have are minor!
The student discount is fantastic, i haven't been to the Omniplex since i started going the EYE with my student card, and I go the EYE 2-3 times a week.

    Suggestions:
Some sort of membership swipe card, accumulate points etc, more you go more points you get.

I don't think you can book tickets at student prices over the web, surely could just present card(s) when collecting them?

Large drink prices are really bad for what you get, it's way smaller than the Omniplex, and I think more expensive. Would prefer either a much larger drink for the same price, or the same drink for a lower price.

The pick and mix prices are again really bad.

Prices for sweets i.e. Sea monsters are almost double what you would expect to pay in a shop for them. I accept that they will obviously be more expensive in the cinema, but the extent of it is dissapointing.

Large drink cups dont fit in the Cup holders in screen one, and these holders are incidently on the back on the ground of the seat in front, and not under the armrest like the other screens.

A couple more showings of the Arthouse films would be good and also to tell you in the paper or the pamphlet that it is subtitled.

A pass machine somewhere in wellpark.

All in all its a far better experience than the Omniplex, which it will be a long time before i go back to!!

Well I still have to go to a cinema outside of Dublin where there is ushers to show you to your previously booked seat.

God knows, there is enough staff working there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

    Suggestions for films:

The Arthouse is a great idea, very much needed in Galway - even with the Galway Film Society's screenings.

Some runs of classic films (Alien, Big Lebowski, Blade Runner, Reservoir Dogs, Starwars Ep4-6 etc.) would be nice - provided that the distributers didn't charge you (the Eye Cinema) an arm and a leg for it of course.

    {edit}
Hector. I'm not too bothered, but I'm running out of smart-ass quips to whisper to friends when he comes on. Perhaps a smiley face in the centre of the screen demonstrating the reaction of the rest of the audience to someone who leaves their mobile phone on during a film ie. swift sharp shock to the ass. I assume ye spent a fair bit of cash on the Hector thing, so get your money's worth, but don't leave it there too long. The humour feels kinda forced and borderline patronising after you've seen it twice.

Well if they would like to do that, I wouldn't mind, although it wouldn't entice me to go to the cinema anymore than I already do.

I saw a good few members of staff just standing around there the other night, doing nothing. They could have been showing people to their seats.

I just booked tickets via the eye cinema website. Whats with the booking fee? This has to be a joke. For 3 adult tickets its E1.50 extra.

I used to book tickets via my credit card with the omniplex and I was never charged a booking fee! I take everything good that I said about the eye!!

I've been to the Eye cinema a few times and on the whole I think it is a nice cinema with plentyof potential but there are a couple of issues I was disappointed with:

*Why are the drinks holders not in the usual place at the end of the arm rest? It seems a bit awkward to be bending up and down to put them on the floor and correct me if I'm wrong but anything larger than a medium drink will not fit in the holder?

*The food stand seems to be very small with only a few staff. You can be waiting a while at the omniplex to get servered but it all visits to the eye it has been even longer (15 minutes is the longest I waited before I gave up and that was not at a big movie opening eitherby the way)

    * I like to be early to get a nice seat but I absolutley detest that Hector add. It is ok the first time but itis soooooooooo long winded and tedious it has to be changed. I mean, combine having to get there early to queue for snacks and get in early enough to get a seat and have to sit through ?Hector means I've started going back to the omniplex for an easier ride
