I have been told with a provisional license I can only drive upto a 125cc motorbike. Is this true?

When applying for a full license for a motorbike (category A) it says I need to do the test on a bike bigger than a 125, I'm wondering how the **** I'm supposed to do that if they will only insure me on a 125 or less

I was told by someone a few years ago you can get insured on a 175cc if it's a chopper style motorbike

Can someone set me straight as I have a provisional license A1 & want to get a 250 & do my test for the A licence.

    Anyone know?

No thats not true. You can get insured on bigger bikes but it might cost ya. YOu also hae to have the bike restricted. Ring carol nash or hibernian. They probably help ya more with the costs.
If you have a bike already stick with it and rent one from ISM. Something like 200 quid for the day including lessons insurance and all that. Think they give you a honda CB250. More than enough for the test

    Cheers spunkymunky

Nice one for the ISM tip, I'll be applying for the A license so :D I'll defo go for that if the insurance is too expensive to get it on the provisional. I've just started couriering on a 2 stroke TDR so I want to get rid of it asap & get a 250.

I'll ring around & get some quotes monday, the ****ers dont open at this hour of the night :p Have you any idea how much extra the insurance would be, would it be 50% or more/less do you think?

EDIT: I know what a restrictor is, I had one taken out of my moped years ago, but what exactly will a restrictor do on a 250, would I still get 70mph out of it do you reckon?

Im not fully sure how a restrictor works but it restricts the engine output to certain level. I affects the the higher end (ie the upper gears) of the bike as far as i know.
70mph? Depends on the bike. I was talking with a fella from carol nash and he recommended a few bikes and gave me some quotes.
The insuance will depend on the bike. Im 23 with fill A1, prov A licence gave me a quote of 1500ish on a 250cc honda hornwt but 1700ish on a 600 bandit so not sure what theyll quote you.

If you have a provisional (or full) A1 licence you are restricted to 125cc.

You need to apply for a provisional A licence. Theory test required if you haven't done one already. It is not necessary to have held an A1 licence before applying for the A.

Power restriction applies on a provisional A and for 2 years after passing the A test.

See the Motorcycle FAQ and Guide to Driving Licences in rec/motors

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Simple answer - NO. You can be insured on say a cbr250 but the insurance will be alot because your on a prov licance..

Yes, if you go and pass you test for your Full A licance ( your bike has to be bigger then 150cc to do this test anyway) then there is a 33bhp restriction on your licance for 2 years. Most ppl i know and have talked to dont bother with this restriction..
