Yeh that looks good, 1gig ram, 128ram gfx, if I'm reading it right it has a 8x dvd writer, I'm not mad about windscreen laptops though.

2.9 kg in weight (plus the weight of a bag) would be a little heavier than what I'd be after, personally. it's about the same weight as the one I currently have and secretly I'm after something about the same weight as a bag of sugar. If the weight and the probable German keyboard isn't a problem for you, the price is good.

nah, most are made by FIC anyway, packard bell and some dells, tiny's to mention a few.

by that token you should avoid alienware, since they are a small company on the grand scale if things.!

only a couple of keys, will get used to it

    delivery 50 euro

returns-no need to, if its defective it will be repaired under toshibas international; warranty

pc world would want 2100 euro for it.

dell are certainly not going to sell any laptop for 1300 delivered with those specs. also the 2 year warranty is 150 euro more with dell.

apple is a restricted platform, everyone and their mother knows this. apples 3 year warranty is 600 euro. repairs are incredibly dear-ie defective hinge replacement comes to over a grand. powerbooks look good yes but are not the ultimate laptops

Were a restricted platform, would be a bit closer to the truth.
Have just replaced hinges, modem, keyboard and slotloading DVD drive on a platinum model for US$240- got the parts online from www.powerbookmedic.com

It is by no means the restricted platform that it once was- you can even run some of your Windows programmes on it nowadays- with the platform emulator- to say nothing about openoffice etc. As for battery life- it beats a PC based laptop any day of the week, and the main reason behind a laptop is portability after all......

Also- when was the last time you saw a Mac collapse with a blue screen error?

I get 4 hours from my Presario X1000(Compaq).

I bought it back in September. I couldn't justify getting a ibook or powerbook. The price was too high especially when I could do everything I needed on this.

I got a 1.6 centrino, 512 ram, 60gb hard drive, radeon 9200, 15.4 widescreen, all the wireless fandango for 700 pounds.

if u were to have gone to an apple repair centre that bill would have come to 2 grand.
i cant say i get blue screen errors. thats a thing of the past with windows 95/ 98 and me. 2000 and xp are rocksolid. its all the viruses that are written for windows that are a HUGH problem but free antivirus programs/ free patches/ free antispyware and auto updates with a broadband connection put a stop to most problems. backups and a ghost disk put a stop to any that get thru.
centrino laptops with on board graphics cards easily match the powerbooks on battery life.
the restrictd platform is for each user to debate but joe public would prefer an open platform i think.

True, but just as true- were I to go to HP with an out of Warranty Omnibook, I would be quoted Euro 1625 (had not dissimilar probs with one, that I decided just wasn't economical to repair recently).

I have a W2k desktop- while blue screen errors are infrequent, they do unfortunately occur- they are not rocksolid by any means (last crash necessitating a reboot was 20 minutes ago when Outlook crashed and pulled the system down with it).

I agree with you that Joe Public would prefer an open platform, however I would dispute your contention that Microsoft platforms are an open platform, defacto or otherwise. Getting programmes from different vendors to coexist and interact with each other on Windows can be the most infuriating thing on this planet- precisely because MS will not allow developers access to code. On the other hand, Mac OS is based on opensource code, and just works- its the simplicity of use and its reliability that is propelling it in the marketplace. The only reason Apple don't sell more computers is a pigheadedness on their part- whereby they insist on producing all their own machines and the operating system (even if there are a number of clones beginning to re-enter the marketplace).

Everyone to themselves though- this is not the proper forum for a debate on the relative merits of Macs versus PCs.

    S.

didnt see that but with a 2 year warranty/vat and delivery its 1550-1600. so 1320 with delivery still pips it as does the larger hard disk. also dell outlet means its used. i dont think im going to pay 250 euro more for something that has a small hard disk, and is used just because 2 major keys are swapped about. also if anything toshiba are more reliable than dell, surveys prove it.

    .

    S.

i wouldnt recommend hp/compaq laptops to anyone. the reason is like apple their warranty are sh!t. surveys prove their laptops are unreliable-do a search and u will see. also a search reveals their repair departments are far from reasonable.

toshiba is a whole diffferent ball game.

Lets see what else you didn't see..

    1. Hardly used : "This is product, which has been returned to Dell for a variety of reasons including cancellation and specification changes. All products have been tested and repackaged to Dell factory standards. Dell Outlet guarantees that the systems are fully functional" I've bought these laptops before and I have never found anything to differenciate them from one bought on the standard website - you even have to peel off the plastic covering
    2. Delivery is free (this week)
    3. 3 Years European Collect and Return (years 1, 2 & 3) is €126
    4. There is a further £50 (€79) discount
    5. The Total price ( and I have it in the dell basket now) is EUR 1,359.42 including VAT

So the hard disk is slightly smaller and the warranty is for 3 years. I think the comparison is quite valid.
