I'm trying to take the audio from a video file or two (avi and mov files) and make them into mp3s.
I've tried it with Cool Edit Pro 2 where I play the file and record on CEP but it's not picking anything up, even after messing around with it for a while all I get is static, I'm sure i did it before and it worked a treat, anyone know what I'm doing wrong, or what needs to be changed?
I also noticed that it's not picking up on the mic anymore when it used it before... I'm guessing its something wrong with the sound card but I dont know where to start... the card is a realtek ac'97 (i think...)

www.virtualdub.org can save the audio from an avi, not sure about mov, tis free also.

wrt the mic, can you record your own voice?
if not check is the drivers installed properly and make sure the mic isnt muted.

thanks for that, it works on the avi but not the mov, oh well, one down.. :D

as for the mic, i cant hear my voice at all, it's annoying. saying that last time I did get it to work it took loads of messing about. the mic isn't muted, I'll check the drivers and see what I can find

The one thing that always fools me with microphones and the like is that Windows has two sets of volume levels - one for playback, one for recording. Have you checked the recording level settings, and if so have you checked the "select" box under the mic's volume slider???

i use videvegas for that sort of thing, works with .mov

however if you dont have that, get audacity, (open source eqivilent to sound forge)

then start a new recording (what you hear or master) and play the .mov and it'll record the audio and then you can trim it or whatever in audacity aswell

got audacity, but its the same as on CEP2. It must be something to do with my drivers.
I checked and they all seem to be installed ok, and there are no other updates....

    grr.
