Very sad for sure. Not sure about him being a great horse, that's an adjective too easily bandied about...Moscow Flyer, Baracouda, Best Mate, Istabaq, they're great. But his death is a great loss for all the connections, especially as he seemed to have found his niche at 3m plus and I just hope the Hobbs team get a winner sometime this week to take away the sour taste just a bit. The only thing to be thankful for is that it happened on the gallops, would have been so much worse if he'd died on the racecourse in front of the owners.

I just hope he's the last absentee from the Gold Cup. The field is already resembling the Liverpool football team, "if you're fit, you run"

Times are good, for sure, but don't mean much at the end of the day. Farmer Jack was a very fine horse, but I just think the word great is bandied about too much. Best Mate is great because he won three Gold Cups. That's a GREAT achievement. They probably found out too late about FJ's best trip and he didn't really achieve greatness. It was a good performance in the Racing Post, but hardly Desert Orchid proportions in 1990, or indeed Gloria Victis in 2002, who beat a field probably a stone and more classier than the one FJ beat (Marlborough, Red Marauder, et al).

I'm certainly not knocking FJ, just don't think he'd achieved greatness.
