Is there anyway to force your computer to use the same IP address everytime you go online??

    couple of q's for you
1/ have u a static ip address assigned to you?
    2/ what os?
    3/ dialup or network?

    For Windows
if you don't have a static ip address, there's nothing you can do.
if you do, go into the tcp/ip setting and assign one.
    For Unix
change the hostname.le0 (this right) to the ip address and then do a
    ipconfig le0 inet ipaddress

    that should do it

    It’s so easy to criticise

OK, first off, if you don't have a static ip (and you dont if you just dial in with a standard account to
esat/tinet/indigo/etc), you can get one but like most things, it costs extra.
I'm not sure why you'd need one, I have a fair idea why you want one...you might consider one of the free dynamic dns providers instead.
They'll let you have yourname.dyndns.org resolve to whatever ip you happen to be connected as.
There's a host of them, penguinpowered.com is run by justlinux.com.

As for the unix instructions, em, some people have strange ideas about what you can
and can't do under unix. I'm not sure what you meant but i think you were saying that even without a static ip you
could set one just cos you're using unix. well, thats not true :) and as for hostname.le0
that's very dependant on what unix variant you're using, plus it'd probably only take effect after a reboot (bad thing), ifconfig is prolly what yer after under a good deal of variants. :)

Just to warn you, it's not a barrel of laughs running your own http server. It might be for a while but it gets boring and can be a pain in the ass too.
Of course, you're gonna learn a bit about things so, go for it! smile.gif
