I have a couple of things I want to ask, they are more to do with etiquette rather than anything else. When you link to another site, should you make the webmaster of that site aware of the link? Should you request that they link to your site (or is that a bit too cheeky)?

    Thats me couple.

well if you stick yahoo on your site and ask them to do the same chances are they will black list you forward that on to every other search engine and you will never get listed, unless you talk it over before you do it dont expect any favours

Well I was actually asking about linking to other sites of similar interests, whereas I would just register with the search engines.

Some sites think that they can stop you linking to theirs. Quoting directly from the 'utter ********' that's on the Lloyds TSB site:
In particular no-one may use any part of our site on any other web site, or link any other web site to our site, without this permission.

In a natural breach of this "stipulation", I hereby declare that this text can be found on their legal page at:

Also... seen the arguement about BT thinking they own the patent on the hyperlink itself and trying to collect the 'royalties' for that? What a bunch of ar$e!!!

Most people link to the front pages of like-minded sites. That's the way the web works.

If you get a link in return, you could enhance your search engine profile. I normally get them when I politely ask.

There's a lot of power in this group of people on boards.ie if they linked back and forth to each other.

Some places complain if you link to them. But I don't think anyone has successfully taken a court case with a front page link, unless it's something like a back-handed keyword link like luser awards that jmcc wrote about in Hackwatch.
